View Full Version : Favorite Muffler?
gordonquixote 08-11-2007, 10:04:07 PM I need some recommendations about what NOT to get.
I thought I didn't like Flowmaster untill I heard MCJohn's Super 44s on a 3" system.
I am thinking about Thrush, Magnaflow, or Dynomax 3" Super Turbos. I am very interested on feedback on the Edelbrock SDT (sp?) or the Hooker Aeroflows.
I want grumbly but not loud until WOT or close. I keep looking at the Hooker Aeros but don't want to drop the cash without some input. Super 44s sure sounded good but the resonance was huge.
I kinda want to listen to the radio while driving too - lol. Hookers anyone?
cmonson 08-11-2007, 10:21:17 PM pypes violators are by far my favorite.
craigblock 08-11-2007, 10:25:22 PM Anything but Flowmasters. Yuck. Flowmasters are fart cans for domestics.
CorkyE 08-11-2007, 10:41:16 PM I have the Hooker Aerochambers and they are pretty dang loud.
KylePBZ 08-11-2007, 11:19:10 PM Well, for what you want I'd say the Super Turbo's. They're mellow at idle and cruising then open up nice on the throttle. I've got the Aero Chambers but they sounded like ass until I put on the X-pipe. Pass on the Flows too.
Kamikaze 08-11-2007, 11:56:51 PM I so agree with Craigblock!(Sorry MusclecarJohn! But I still would like to hear your new 44's!)
1) Flowtech Terminators!
2) Borla or Spintechs
3) Starting to really like the Pypes Violators!
4) Edelbrock SDT Ti-Tech coated
tomspo04 08-12-2007, 12:00:26 AM I've got Magnaflo 3" with X pipe. Sound great, but kind of loud...and LOUDER when you open it up! I'm actually thinking about finding something a little more tame.
Tom
GoldenOne7710 08-12-2007, 12:30:04 AM I run a Flowmaster 80 series dual/dual. I actually get a LOT of compliments on the way my car sounds. With tailpipes, I don't get any "drone" inside the car while cruising. I can't really complain with it. And if the Flowmaster is holding my car back....it ain't by much. At the strip, the exhaust is dropped anyway.
muscl car 08-12-2007, 05:32:24 AM i'm getting ready to put these mufflers on my camaro , they're IMCA modified header mufflers made by schoenfeld 3" dia and 8" long . these mufflers sound really nice at idle and wicked as heck at WOT !!!:) :)

ProStreet383 08-12-2007, 07:33:05 AM Dynomax bullet mufflers for me thank you!
US MARINE 08-12-2007, 08:08:42 AM I had Flowmaster 40's they were beat up and rattling. I went with Pypes after reading many good reviews from different people.

Ian76LT 08-12-2007, 08:36:22 AM I personally like spintech. they have a few different mufflers so you could get anything from tame sounding to real loud and raspy. a kid in high school had a spintech muffler on his 2000 SS, I have yet to hear a better sounding car.
Smokin70SS 08-12-2007, 09:18:52 AM I agree with Spintechs. Awesome sounding mufflers. If you go to their site they have a few sound clips. Tame at idle but nasty at WOT and flow pretty darn good. I used their Sportsman Streets and am going to be using their race mufflers pretty soon.
SHANE 73Z 08-12-2007, 10:12:27 AM I just put a set of Eddy SDTs on my car. I really like the sound so far, they have a much deeper tone than the FM 40 series they replaced. I will try to get a video clip this week.

gordonquixote 08-12-2007, 12:29:09 PM Summit and Jegs both sell a` $95 and $195 X-pipe - have any of you bought either. Is it worth spending the X-tra $100?
Macadoo355 08-12-2007, 12:48:32 PM I was looking into the flowmaster super 44's, anyone run them yet?

Check out the two videos in my vacation post in BS.
jayb53guy 08-12-2007, 01:02:50 PM I like the $25 summit mufflers. Cheap, and sound just fine.
Right now I am running thrush glass packs though, and I hate them. I hate the popping when the car is winding down, very, very annoying. I think I have a leak...:)
Macadoo355 08-12-2007, 02:15:22 PM Gordo that sounds mint, now who knows if they will sound the same on my truck
ttopbandit 08-12-2007, 06:41:03 PM Had flow's for a while, and on several other cars and 1 truck. Bought a pair of FORCE, thru Jeg's. Nice, Have had alot of compliments, even had a few friends buy some.
FreedomPenguin 08-12-2007, 06:45:17 PM I like the $25 summit mufflers. Cheap, and sound just fine.

currently what im running..
bracketracer-78 08-12-2007, 08:44:32 PM I like my open headers. Next year though i will have mufflers on the car because ill be running street and pro. I'm looking at a set of race bullets.
2FAST2z 08-13-2007, 09:48:46 PM heres another vote for Spin Tech, nothin sounds better.
JL8Jeff 08-13-2007, 10:49:22 PM I'm running the Summit turbos(3") and they have a nice rumble without being too loud or resonating while driving. I also like the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers. They were decently quiet at idle and cruising but really opened up at WOT. My 91 454SS pickup had a pair of Flowmaster big block mufflers and they sound perfect on that truck. I would stay away from the Flowmaster 40's if you want to drive the car.
bbc nova 08-13-2007, 11:22:04 PM I have Dynomax bullets 3.5 in I like the sound at idle and full throttle but driving on the freeway for any period of time royally sucks. I think Im going to switch to the ultraflow welded. Click the link in my sig to take a listen.
BigAls87Z28 08-13-2007, 11:44:30 PM I like my Magnaflow exhaust. I wish I had a stronger engine, but the car soudns good and doesnt destroy your ears when driving.

Holy shart - that is loud (but gnarly)!
80ZED28 EH 08-14-2007, 12:36:13 AM I love my Dynomax Ultra-flos. Really woke my car up big time. Fairly tame sounding idling/cruising, but hit the go fast pedal and they come to life! To be honest, I didn't care about the sound as much as I did performance when choosing mufflers. When I held the ultra-flos up and could see right thru them, I knew they were gonna perform....so I figure I got the best of both worlds.....sound great and perform too.

Dynomax claims they are good to 2000 HP. Im all about performance but now I want performance without the headache!! Dam im getting old:(
BlownBigBlock 08-14-2007, 03:15:45 PM I'm trying Car Chemistry's stuff... No clue how it's gonna sound. Putting the 3 disk inserts in the collectors. Then running 2 baffles in each pipe further downstream. If the sound is manageable then I'll be happy...
Still may have to cut some of my floor, but no bulky mufflers and plenty of clearance with the oval tubing.
hhott71 08-14-2007, 03:23:15 PM THRUSH Sonic Turbos
Sc0tt_again 08-14-2007, 04:00:31 PM 3" Magnaflows - nice rumble at idle, tame while cruising, but open the throttle and you know I'm comming.
pdq67 08-14-2007, 07:39:08 PM I have always loved the cackling, "Cop-calling", W/D/T smooth perforated inner pipe GLASSPACKS w/ full length tailpipes out the back past the bumper!!
Too loud, then add a second one right behind the first down each side that will act like resonators to help tone her down!!
And fwiw, they flow just about as well as the same size straight pipe too!!

rindoze 08-14-2007, 08:47:21 PM Dynomax bullet mufflers for me thank you!
Hate those mufflers. Loud as hell at all times. I think the summit turbo mufflers are nice. Quiet when you want them to be and load when you get on it. Nice tone to.
1981gMachine 08-14-2007, 10:16:13 PM My reason for purple hornies, they give my car that nice old muscle car sound from 0-3500 rpms, and when I crack the throttle to WOT I get the "everyone stops what they are doing to look" sound. I can't tell you how many people my passengers said they saw just drop their mouth as I drove by. Might I add I have it dumping under the back seats, so it doesn't crackle like a full out the rear exhaust would.
andymiller 08-14-2007, 11:16:08 PM Not sure why everyone is againist the classic Flowmaster, I love the tone.

i second that...my has a nice classic muscle car sound actually...running no balance just straight 2.5 inch orignal 40's....:bowtie:
pennynickels 08-15-2007, 12:37:19 AM I have the MagnaFlow 2.5 X pipe system (from Summit) on my car and don't really like it. It sounds too "Flowmastery" and has a nasty resonance cruising. I do get lots of looks and compliments just cruising around so apparently people like it. It's not too loud and seems too perform pretty well. But eventually I would like to try something else.
And, of course, everyone's engine will sound different. But I'm sure I'm one of the typical SBC.
gordonquixote 08-15-2007, 08:13:40 AM O ordered a full 3" system with Summit Turbos - thought it would be a good starting point. I'll weld everything but the mufflers so I can swap easily in the future. $21 each is hard to beat for turbos. They are name brand seconds according to Summit.
Should be here just in time for the weekend!

ProStreet383 08-15-2007, 02:52:28 PM Dynomax 4" Bullet mufflers exiting behind the doors. Idle is at 1500 because I dont have enough converter for this 13.5:1 383 stroker. In gear she will only idle down to 1000. Anything under that and it will stall out. Gotta love 106 LSA and duration OVER 300

I need a video with it in gear. This thing just plain sounds NASTY!

hey that looks sweet...paiht looks cherry nice job:cool:
TheFly 07-08-2008, 05:32:04 AM 1St would be Thrush but you can't get them anymore.
The original blue glass packs.
2nd is CherryBomb glasspacks as they now own Thrush but they come in red.
Painted ones on mine black, red stands out to much.
Mwilson 07-08-2008, 06:02:15 AM I still cant say enough about my mufflers, sound awesome at id;e and very easy on the ears at cruise, WOT is evil!
rscamaro73 07-08-2008, 10:58:14 AM Dynomax Ultra Flows.....3" types, with H-pipe exhaust....
But I think it more depends on how 'built' your engine actually is....and the amount of plumbing between the engine and the outlets....several factors to make them louder or quieter.
(ie turndowns under the car or full tailpipes with cross over tube)
What about this exhaust ?? http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Ferrari-F430-with-F1_169739.htm
grasmo 07-08-2008, 11:01:25 AM sonic turbo. hands down.
marin 07-16-2008, 09:52:52 AM Hey man,
DynoMax UltraFlo 3" . Definitely.
I read up tons on exhaust technology (still have the links if you are interested).
To get max CFM, I would not compromise beyond a DynoMax UltraFlo ...
The competitors have power-robbing low CFM that they hype up with "market speak" some stories about back pressure, exhaust tuning, etc.
Yes, exhaust tuning is important, but no, under-rated muffler CFM cannot be compensated with any kind of reflector/crossover magic.
Competitors, such as Flowmaster, have high-flowing mufflers only in race-only applications, which are also freaking loud.
My setup
3" everything with crossovers.
Hedman Hedders 1 3/4" primaries -> Flowmaster D-port crossover -> Dynomax 3" UltraFlo (side-side) -> TorqueTech exhaust tubes all the way to the bumper.
500+ HP on the flywheel.
marin 07-16-2008, 09:54:01 AM As for sound, I heard all of the ones posted here and the most memorable sound is Hooker Aerochambers..
89rodknocker 07-16-2008, 09:01:53 PM Damn i'm supprised that nobody has stated them but BORLA XR1'S Are the shite. I run borlas on every car I own Wife's truck and they will be going on my 73. They are pretty quite at idle but once you get going they sound like nothing else.
Gary S 07-16-2008, 09:11:20 PM I've yet to hear any chambered muffler that I can stand the sound of. Every one I've heard has a nasty resonance somewhere between idle and the upper part of the rpm band. That noise isn't acceptable to me.
I really like the louvered glasspacks. If you install them backwards, they have no more restriction than the best chambered mufflers, and because of the baffles, they can be very quiet if you want them to be simply by using longer ones.
Do not get the perforated glasspacks because the noise from them is just as obnoxious as the noise of the chambered mufflers.
SC_78 07-17-2008, 01:11:58 AM im looking for mufflers now for my car, i like the sound of the fm44, and fm 40's but i dont want to be another muscle car with flows, i am looking at an 3'' x pipe and slp loudmouths, and dumping them before the axle, should sound pretty good
muscl car 07-17-2008, 03:10:49 AM i still like my 6" long 3"dia flowmaster 1 chamber delta force mufflers ....... they sound awesome !!!!!:) :)
http://www.skidawgracing.com/musclcar.mpg (http://www.skidawgracing.com/musclcar.mpg)
rockheadrocks 07-24-2008, 01:14:48 PM I'm rather fond of the sound of my darn near burnt out Thrush Red Bullets. $17 apiece at Canadian Tire back in 1991.
TheFly 07-24-2008, 01:48:58 PM The big debate of an H or X pipe is next, right now I just run true duals with my Thrush glass packs. I like being able to drop the exhaust one side at a time real easy, since I weld everything off the car and then install. [hate clamps]
Though thought maybe of adding some type of H pipe adapters and use one of them braided flex pipes, that way it could go in and out without the pipes being lose, or just yanked out to service the trans. If I did it with real pipe, they would have to be sort of lose to wide the gap to yank it out to do similar work.
protour73 07-26-2008, 07:38:45 PM Summit and Jegs both sell a` $95 and $195 X-pipe - have any of you bought either. Is it worth spending the X-tra $100?
Gordo.......drop the coin and go with a new complete stainless system, it's the last one you will buy!!
jdove 07-26-2008, 07:52:24 PM I had 3 inch delta series flows on my fo fiddie fo and it rocked.Loved it...
Earlsfat 07-27-2008, 11:28:55 PM Think I'm going to run a Jeg's 3" x-pipe, with the 30" glass packs and turndowns before the axles... but might hafta rig something to get it to pass inspection.
If it's too loud, I might get tails, not sure yet though.
tnt.racing 07-28-2008, 12:04:52 AM Dynomax ultraflow or bullet
Straight thru design = more horsepower
ultraflow is quiet
Bullet sounds mean with a roller cam
Flowmasters are to heavy and restrictive, I used to use them to slow my BBC down to index race. Delta flow 50 series slowed my BBC down .100 in the 1/8mile
finally71z28 07-28-2008, 01:26:46 AM Wow! Apparently beauty is still in the eyes (ears) of the beholder! Well, for what it's worth, I have a single transverse fFowmaster on my 71 Z. It sounds really cool to me - and that's all that really matters!
ZS10 07-28-2008, 01:50:23 AM Warlocks. They sound great, and I can undo 3 wingnuts, pull the caps out and I have 6' of straight open 3" pipe off the collectors.
