I've never had a vehicle with hydraulic lifters before and I need some advice on how to adjust the valve lash on my 454...

Is it true that to get the best results you have to do it with the motor running? If so I need some helpful hints on tools and techniques to help keep me from getting burned and splattered.

If I can get close with the motor not running do I need to run it for a minute to pre-load the lifters? How long after do I have to adjust before the pre-load "wears off"? Is it 3/4 turn past tight like with a 350?

Thanks, Tim B.

It's done exactly the same as setting PRELOAD on any hydraulic lifter. Lash is only used in solids and you'll find using the term 'preload' for hydraulics and 'lash' for solids will be better received.

Do a search for 'the phrase "Exhaust opening / intake closing" and you'll find the exact way to do it. Or go to Comp, Crane or Lunati web sites and search for 'valve adjustment'. You 'can' and it works just fine to do the hot, running engine method. It just mades such a frickin mess!!!!
