Over the years I have comtemplated one of those cool looking starters but since the cheap stock rebuilt ones have always worked for me I've always found better places to spend my money.
I have heard the Vortec 454 starters are of the mini variety and should be pretty cheap.

are they strong enough to turn over a 11:1 motor like mine and know a part# or place to get one

Heard they were very tough, start looking at the wreakers or your local parts conglomerate store, something like a late 90's 454 should do the trick, and they are of the permanent magnet style.

Being a dirt track racer and all http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif, why don't pickup your Midwest Motorsports book and look on page 42 at their MWM GMS 160 (153 or 168 tooth) mini high-torque starter for $129.99. The description says : straight pattern, fits both 153/ 168 tooth flywheels, 2 HP and NEW - not rebuilt. We use this exact starter on my uncle's 12:1 355 and have had NO troubles with it. On the same page they sell a new strater drive also....

Hope that helps http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

The stock GM mini is what I use on my 355 and the 427. Competetive price and easy to get parts for if need be.

i found one @ www.speedwaymotors.com (http://www.speedwaymotors.com) it's $109.00 it's comparable to the hitachi enforcer starter.the case can be rotated 360 deg. and a 1.0 kw motor and only 7.5 lbs.it also comes with a heat shield and quick disconnect harness.

Powermaster makes the Midwest one http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif Just like Crane makes their camshafts and they are $69.99...

The only problem I had with the Powermaster starter was on my 454BBC in my crewcab. I kept putting New Delco-Remy starters on thinking I was getting bad starters, they seemed to drag when running the A/C and towing the camper. What I didn't realize was I was getting antifreeze into the #1 hole somehow, and when I switched to the Powermaster starter, it never bogged down and pop goes the cylinder wall in #1. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/frown.gif

Very happy with the Summit mini starter I got awhile back. They happened to have it on sale. BTW, It's made by CVR.

GM Performance part mini starter is my choice. I only paid about $200 for mine.

I run a Hitachi for my 14.3:1 compression 360ci. I went through three CSI'S before changing over though. No problems as of yet!

I had Maaco install a new one for me since my starter died while they were painting it. It only cost me $98 for a high torque mini, but I had to pick it up for them and it was at their discounted price.

I've been using the GMPP mini starter for nearly 10 years now. Granted, my motor is only a 9:1 350, but my battery is in the trunk, and it's a little Group 51 (Honda Civic-size) battery, and I have no problems rolling the engine.
