I have a 71 firebird and am building a 600 horsepower 454, i planned on using 2 inch headers and was thinking of going with the supercomps by hooker, but heard they hang really low, my car is already lowered and my currrent hookers on my pontiac motor are almost flattened totally! don't want to spend $550 just to flatten them out!! anybody with any experience?

I doubt anyone will have an answer you want to hear.
I had a similar problem with my small block camaro, front end was low when I bought the car, due to tired springs. The headers would hit everything. I installed new Z/28 front coils, now all is well. That is with 1.3/4 headers, 2" will be worse yet.
I believe your only course of actions would be to either avoid dips and bumps in the road, raise your car up to stock heights, or install some sort of bump stop so the car doesn't bottom out or perhaps some sort of skid plate to protect your headers.
No great response here, but camaros are low to begin with before lowering them. Good luck!

Even littly bitty small block headers will get scraped over time. You might have to think about what rustbucket said. Get the front end up to stock at least and use some stiffer springs. They arent that expensive.

GORGEOUS car, BTW http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

Do your headers hang low?
do they scrape on every hole?
Do they hit on every hump
Do they hang on every hole?
Do they have flat spots like a card board box?
Do your headers hang low?

I think that about sums up headers on an F Body...

I doubted you would change the springs.
Buy the proper headers for the engine and build some sort of skid plate to protect the header tubes, then you can have the best of both worlds!

Dynomax has some smaller tubes than you have, and they don't scrap on mine (454, but stock height).

I have 2" Hooker Super Comps in my '81 Z-28 with a BBC. They fit great and don't hang low. Don't know if it makes a difference, but I do have Moroso solid motor mounts. The front suspension is the HAL coil-over conversion kit, so the front doesn't sag like it would with SBC springs.

Good luck!

I have to agree. I used the same headers and I am VERY pleased with the fit and finish. The front of the car dropped down significantly from where it was with the small block. Now it is at a normal ride height. I haven't nailed them on anything as of yet. With 3 passengers I pumped my muffler clamp on a speed bump on one side but no big deal.. I gotta get it all welded together.

I'll try and post some pictures next week. I gotta borrow a friends digital camera (man, I'm in the dark ages).

Have a great 4th!

What about "shorties". The ones where the collectors are not under the car so only the pipe after the collector is going under the car. Not sure what kind of power loss there is and I have no idea what brand but its just a thought.

I have the SuperComps and yes they do touch down on speed bumps etc. This is with Guldstrand RR spring up front too ! When I still had the smallblock springs on I couldn't hardly even drive down the street without touching down. It's especially bad on the passenger side, I'm looking for a differant set of headers myself, at this point it's looking like custom headers are my best option, there's actually plenty of room between floor pan and header to make a tighter fitting set. I wonder why they didn't make them tuck up tighter to begin with ?
