Hello I have a 79 Z8 I'd like to put an aftermarket stereo in, but I have a problem. The only radio type plug I see has 4 wires going into it. I assume these are just speakers.. It is obvious someone else had put a cd player in the car previously but would they have had any reason to cut the other plug when removing it? (If in fact there is another plug missing). I've done plenty of stereo installs in newer cars and I know something is missing here. Am I in fact missing one more plug or am I overlooking something?? The Scosche adaptor I purchased doesn't look at all compatible with the plug I do have.
Hope that makes sense.. Do these cars come with 2 plugs? And if I am missing one, what is your advice..
Thanks ! Travis

Now 79s I'm sure are different from 73s. However, mine has the 4 wire plug also. One wire is for ground, one wire for power (accessory power), one wire for the radio light (headlight function), and one wire for the center dash speaker. My car did not come stock with rear speakers. I took the ground wire and accessory power wire from that harness. I then ran my own full-time power lead and speaker wires all around.

I appreciate your response. I thought 79's came with atleast one rear speaker? So that would make atleast 2 of the harness plug wires for speaker. That leaves two more.. one for ground and one for power but what about the memory function?? All I can figure is someone must have hacked off a harness? I contacted Scosche (stereo supply) inquiring whether or not anyone had ever reported any problems with their harness adaptors not fitting. They said there hasn't been any case, everything should match up. They confirmed that the adaptor I purchased was correct for my year and make, but I can tell you my current radio plug with the four wires is not going to be compatible. I'm going to jot down the colors of these wires, and maybe take a picture or two. In the meantime does anyone else have any advice/ideas? The best I can figure is someone cut the plug off for ... well.. I couldn't imagine why they'd do that. I appreciate your help!!

As simple as it is to run the 2 power wires to the fusebox.
Red ACC
Yellow 12v BAT
2 1/4" spade terminals.

Thank you for your help. I'll end up doing that I'm sure. Looking up into the dash, it appears there is a cut yellow, a cut grey/black, and also a cut grey wire. Sigh. Does anyone sell a radio harness plug so I can reconstruct my car's wiring correctly?
Thanks! Travis

No harness plug is going to help. You will need to run your own wires.

I will use new wires yes, I was going to run them into an original plug. As long as I'm connecting to the appropriate wires left on the plug, why wouldn't that work? I think it would be good as new.. I must be missing something.
Thank you

My manual describes wires of certain colors... but iCant find at least half of em. im sure iCan figure out the speakers.. but the power has me stumped for now. iUsed my test light to find a hot wire with the ign acc on, but mi radio still dont come on.
