View Full Version : What would you pay for this 71 SS?

71 SS with all original sheet metal.
Whole car is solid.
Trunk has surface rust but can be cleaned and painted.
Undercarraige is all solid and in unrestored condition.
Interior needs correct seats, console, and a dash pad.
Engine and trans are not original.

I'm thinking of buying this car to restore as a hotrod, or just flip it. What do you think it's worth or what would you pay for it?

Looks nice. Assuming it has a Z27 trim tag my guess is the car should run about $12K. Maybe more if it is a 4-spd Muncie and posi. I assume it is not deluxe interior. It would be fun to run a small refrigerator magnet around the body of an old Michigan car.

That much? Even with the car needing new interior and not numbers matching?

So 71 SS have Z27 on the trim tag? I was under the impression that there was no way to tell if it was a true SS.

If it is a true SS, then I think 12K is in the ball park.

I would hope my survivor 70 R/S SS would sell for MUCH MORE than 12K (albeit with a new paint job?????) so why wouldnt this 71 be worth more than 12K....I just think the Original Rally's would look better on the car, or at least something other than incorrect 1st Gen wheels.............

The car was built in Los Angeles so the cowl tag won't have the Z27 code. Is there any other way to verify a "SS"?

Are those seats out of a late 80's or early 90's Camaro?

I would be happy if the car could sell for 10k, but I'm not so sure as you guys are.

Early 2nd gens prices have been climbing. RS is just no that rare. RS is nothing special unless it is added to a SS or Z package. If this SS had the original motor/trans in this condition it would be $18K-$20K. I saw a 71 RS/SS 396 that was near perfect that sold for $28K at auction. It was worth every penny. 71-73 Z's in good condition are $25K-$35K. 70's are even more.

If it an LA car and there is no build sheet, window sticker you might as well assume it is not an SS. That makes it an $8K to $10K car.

Gotta disagree with that Chuck. I despise the rally wheels on any GM product. The wheels that are on it give it a much more aggressive look than the rallys.

Not trying to be too picky, but the door panel in the picture above is incorrect for a 71. As far as price is concerned, there are several factors to consider. First, of course is originality of the car, and assurance that it is a genuine SS. Next, you have to decide what you want to do with it, and that depends on the condition of the body, interior, etc. If you plan to restore it to as close as original as possible, and you have a long way to get there, you want to get the buying price much lower. If you don't care about the originality, and you can live with resto or incorrect parts on the car, then the buying price might be right for you. That's why it's so hard to just tell you what the car is worth. It's been said a million times here, but it bears repeating, the car is worth whatever the buyer and seller can agree upon.

Thanks for your input. My main interest in the car is the fact that it has all it's original metal. Nothing about the car is original, besides it's body. The seller is asking $8000 for the car, which I think is a fair price. My intentions were to either flip the car or build it up as a hotrod. It seems that flipping the car won't be worth it. I'm now can't decide if I want the car for myself or not. As you said, 8k is a little pricy if you're going to rebuild the whole car anyways. Then again, it's getting real hard to find solid cars in my neck of the woods.

I agree! After looking for months for a solid camaro, I could not find anything. Even cars that people claimed were restored, were full of bondo, and rust if you look in the right places.

I finally found a 73 LT with its original paint, and all original sheetmetal. Floor pans were solid, as were the trunk pan, and frame rails. I probably paid more for the car than most would (low retail) but I did not want to replace sheetmetal with aftermarket garbage.

It sounds like one of your main concerns is solid original sheetmetal. That is hard to find. Paying more for the car than other people would, should not distract you from buying it.

The body and undercarriage look really clean,if there's no putty and it runs/drives well and doesn't need major work it might be worth it.It doesn't appear to need alot outside of changing minor cosmetic stuff to make it correct. Is the motor and trans worked, if so that adds to the value ?? I've sunk way too much money into mine and it's no where as nice as that one yet....$8,000 would be a bargain compared to what i'll end up spending. If you like it...buy it,change what you don't like..seems to be a clean car for 8G's whether it's a SS or not

RePhil

I figured I would have $18,500 into the car to get it the way I want it. The engine was just rebuilt in the spring, but it's very mild and I wouldn't be happy with it. Here's the budget I worked out, but I'm sure it would end up being much more in the end...

Car 8000
New Engine 4000
New Trans 800
Cowl hood 450
Seats 600?
Dash pad 310
Paint 4000
Console 380

I would also clean up the under carraige and por-15 it, as well as the trunk. I already have new rear leaf springs for it, and the front suspension looks to be good. So, in the end the total might be around 20k! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/eek.gif

I think $8000 is a good price. You should be able to get $700+ for the motor if you don't want it. I think you have under estimated the cost of a good trans.
Do not por your trunk. I did mine a long time ago. When I went to restore it, that stuff just does not come off. Just prime it and spray it with the original spackle paint. It will last if you have good seal on the rear window, good weather strip, good seal around the tail lights and the spoiler holes are filled correctly.

Thanks for the trunk tip.

Is the TCI Street Fighter TH-350 a bad choice for the trans? That's what I had in mind since I can pick one up locally at Summit. $745.95 plus tax

I see you are in the "rust belt" with the rest of us. As clean as the car appears I think 8K is a great price for it! JMHO
