OK..I FINIALLY got my motor craked up and I'm tyring to tune it. I'm new at this so bare with me please...

First off, I have a 69 327 bored .030 over with 3927185 head with larger valves installed. I'm not sure about the size of my cam, but it sounds pretty big since the car lopps a lot. I'm running headers with 2 1/2 inch exhuast with Flowmaters. The carb is a Holley 750 VS on a Performer intake.

1. If I run the car in the garage with the garage door open, the exhuast fumes are so strong I can bearly breath! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif The car is facing the rear. I don't think this is normal. Is this my air/fuel mixture? If so, what is the best way to tune those in?

2. I have moisture coming out of my exhaust. Is this the same problem as number 1?

3. I have my timing set for 7-8 BTDC. Is this correct? How do I know where to set it up at?

This is a good start...I will ask more questions once I get this fixed, or worked out.

Thanks, and again I'm new to this so give me a break please! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

check your plugs to verify it's running rich. and as to the moisture coming out of the tail pipe, it's water vapor that condenses into a liquid untill the exhuast warms up. it's a common thing that happens on start up when all of the exhuast and for that matter, the motor also is cool.
i would bet you need to lean out the carb by changing to some smaller jets.
when i start my motor in the winter, i'll let it warm up to temp, rev it up to blow any unwanted water out of the system then kill the motor. short drives to the store in the winter is one of the main reasons you exhuast will rust out prematurely.

Your timing is probably OK for now. Don't worry about that too much yet, as long as the motor is running at proper temp, you should be ok. You can advance it later and figure out exactly where you want it when you get the whole engine running better.

The moisture in the exhaust is probably normal, and should go away within a couple of minutes of startup.

Running rich probably means that you need to adjust your idle screws in somewhat, or re jet the carb. I'd start with the Idle mixture screws first, as that is just the turning of screws. Getting these correctly set took care of my fuel problems.

I'm not very good with carbs, but this is pretty much going to be a trial and error deal, for the timing and the fuel. It took me a while to get mine running well, and it was basically ask a question, try the answer, and then ask more questions until I got it figured out.

First off, thanks for the reply's!

Well I re-adjusted my Air/Fuel Mixture screws. I had them setup at 2 1/2 turns and now they are setup for 1/2 turn. I still have the exhuast fumes, but not NEARLY as bad. What I did was:

1. Cranked it up and let it get to 185* (where the fan comes on)
2. Turn the screws to 2 turns open.
3. Turn the screw in 1/4 turn until I found my RPM running the highest. At 2 turns I was sitting at 600-650, at 1/2 turn I was setting at 900-950 RPM's.
4. Once I found that spot, I set my idle back down to 600-650 and it was a lot better.

I think that I might have to replace my jets to get it completly gone. Do you think the 750 is too much carb for my combo?

I still need to reduce this problem more. I think that I need to reduce my jets like stated. What size are the standard jets and what size do I need to go to?

Or, do you think the 750 is too much carb and I need to go with a 600?

a 600cfm carb would be alot better. the responce will be crisper with the 600. the 750vs should be okay cause the vacuum side of the carb will only give it what it can handle. but as for driving around, the 750 will eat more fuel cause it's like your running around with a big 2bbl carb until you stomp on it. i, personally, would run a 600dp. that way you'll get better fuel economy and when you stomp it, it'll haul some butt imediatly.
if you want to tune the carb you have(which will be cheaper initialy), pull the jets out of the primarys and see what size they are, then go to parts store and get some jets that are 2-4 sizes smaller. example: if your jets are 78, buy some 76's and some 74's.
