Yes - Hot will give you a more accurate adjustment.

Should adjust with the motor running or can i drive it then take the valve cover off and adjust them?

I Have Always Adjusted Them Cold Using A Feeler Gauge For The Clearance Specified On Your Cam Spec Sheet. When The Engine Gets Hot Those Clearances Will Be Right. Been Doing It This Way For Years And Never Had Any Problems

It will be pretty hard to stick that feeler gauge in there with the motor running.

Adjust them with the motor at operating temp, motor off
Use the max-lift method described below...
so easy a caveman could DO IT!!!
Intake Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!
with #1 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Intake Valve
with #8 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Intake Valve
with #4 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Intake Valve
with #3 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Intake Valve
with #6 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Intake Valve
with #5 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Intake Valve
with #7 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Intake Valve
with #2 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Intake Valve
Exhaust Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!
If you have noticed, this is the same procedure as the intake valves listed above, just that you are now adjusting the exhaust valves the same way.
with #1 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Exhaust Valve
with #8 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Exhaust Valve
with #4 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Exhaust Valve
with #3 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Exhaust Valve
with #6 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Exhaust Valve
with #5 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Exhaust Valve
with #7 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Exhaust Valve
with #2 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Exhaust Valve

Everyone Has Their Own Opinion. The Same Way If You Called Every Performance Shop In Town Everyone Will Have A Different Opinion On What Combination To Run. You Just Have To Do What Works Best For You.

I gotta ask, how in the world do you check the clearance to the .001 with it running? http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m53/Fast72SS/dunno.gif

How do I check to the .001" thing??

Solid lifter cams here. WITH FEELER GAUGES!!

It's a taught/learned "feelie" thing is all as it is hot, running at a slow idle!!

Same way w/ the spinning p/r's between my thumb and index finger w/ a hy-cam RUNNING!!!!

Except here, it's the spin and the disappearing click sound as I hit zero clearance and continue to go down about anywhere from an 1/8th to a 1/2 turn tighter!!

pdq67

Ps., the same way I used to be able to time my old point dizzy equipped engine by ear!! Keep turning the dizzy forward until she kicked a bit back on the starter and back her off a schosh after using "feeler gauges" on the points to set dwell!!

Hell guy, this is the way it used to be done!!

You can adjust them cold if you want. Joe Shermans rule of thumb is, with aluminum heads, subtract .004" from the suggested lash, with iron heads, subtract .002" from the suggested lash. When things heat up and expand your lash will be right on the money.
