Many people do it, that's for sure. I'd look in the swap meet section and try to buy one of someone local to you. At least then you will have some idea of what your getting...

Good advise. Ask me how I know. My butt still smarts from buying my first engine off e-bay.

It wasn't for me. I'm trying to learn this stuff but I have to do most it on my own. I was looking for a 350 to work on and someone convinced me to by a 72 GMC truck off ebay that was about to close in 3 hours. Figured what the hell, all I got to lose is $300 bucks. Motor was a total POS. Almost nothing worth salvaging. Block needs work, everything else is junk. Pretty much soured me on the project.
Nobody's fault but my own. If I had it to do over again I would go to one of the local machine shops and pick up a rebuilt short block. In the long run I'd be money ahead. At least until I had the experience to be able to buy a used one without getting screwed.

Yeah, I got a block, too. It's got a crack in it, but it's on the inside so you'll never see it.

No matter where you go, if you cannot hear it run, check the oil and water and see the exhaust, you will never know what kind of shape it is in just by looking at it. Unless you can see something obvious, like a hole in the side of the block, you will need to disassemble it to find out. I bought a whole car for parts and all I knew about it was that it "ran when it was parked". I was lucky, it started when I got home, but it was a dog. Found the cam was flat, but I only wanted the motor for rebuild anyway. I also bought a "good motor" long block. Looked good, but when it was apart found two rods broke and destroyed the motor completely.
I would suggest looking for your "$300" cars with what you want and get the running but wrecked special. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
