okay guys I have a question. on this website the onfo that it gives me says that all lt1 engines were made from the 010 block. I was at a show on the weekend and I talked to a guy with a factory 72 z28 with 68000 orig. miles but his block was an 014 block can this be true. the number on the block on the frontnear the head was vo303cks and then the last 6 digits of the vin can this be true. Waht other blocks did they use.

I don't know the answer you're looking for but I do know that you cannot see the 010 or 020 high nickel casting with a transmission bolted to the block. It is behind the flywheel to the side of a waterjacket plug back there.

If my infi is right, then your alittle off.

My info shows the 70-72 LT1 was built from a "104" casting block. Not a 010, or 014

Here's all the info I got on thr LT1

1970 engine is used as the baseline. 1971 & 72 will be identical except where noted
1971 had compression dropped from 11.0:1 to 9.0:1 by using different pistons and bigger CC cylinder head.
1972 is identical to 1971, except horsepower dropped 10 and rating was changed from GROSS HP to NET HP.

I see, you're talking about the actual casting #, not a high nickel casting.

Gotcha.

My book lists "CKS" as a 1972, 255hp/LT1, a 1973, 145hp engine and a 1977, 170hp engine.

the Block number is indeed 3970010
the 4 you are referring to is part of the next statement "4 bolt main".
It should (and does now) read:
Block 3970010 4 bolt main, suffix codes: CTB, CTC
you stated:
Block 39700104 bolt main, suffix codes: CTB, CTC
see the difference?
I have spent too much time lately looking at these ...

Alan Colvin's book says that yes indeed, the 3970014 block was used in 1972 along with the 3970010 block for building Z28 engines. These two blocks were essentially the same, and the Z28 versions were all 4 bolt main ones.

FYI, the 010 020 is also cast into the block behind the timing cover, not just on the back of the block.

+1. This is true on my 010 block. The 020 is noted in both places.

And, contrary to what many people believe, the 010 and 020 do not indicate nickel content or any other metal content. They only help identify the molds used to cast the block.

At least 2 camaros with 014 blocks have been seen The 014 block is a Tonawanda casting 2 and 4 bolt ."Strike shortage it seems" The block/ engine ? was sent to flint for build / instalation,All have the V before the built date even though they were Tonawanda castings . They can be identified be the cast date is on the block behind the drivers side head & not on the rt side as with flint blocks .
