I ordered a set of used 305 heads from a boneyard so I could overhaul them with my nephew this winter. The problem is that I ordered the heads to fit my 81 305 so I could use them when it's rebuilt. They sent me a set from a 350 with 75cc chambers. The casting number is 3998993, which by my searching comes up as an early 70's 350 head. These are not going to make me the least bit happy on a 305, are they? Any ideas, besides sending them back or swapping in a 350?

Dont think youd be happy with those heads on either a 305 or 350. No compression.

Try to find either 305HO, -416's or -601's!

elzie,
I still have a set of freshly done 416 H.O. castings. They are 58cc chambers with stainless valves (1.94 int / 1.5 exh). They also have pushrod guide plates and springs good for .515 valve lift.
If you are interested email me and we can work a deal.
Send back those smogger 350 heads.

Actually 993s aren't too shabby for a smog head. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif
For 305 heads, look for 601 or 416s first, then if you get in a bind theres the plane jane 434 and 450 heads used during the '70s.

I'm going to keep the heads and rebuild them with my nephew. I have several other used pieces that may be what he needs to start building a car for himeself http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/wink.gif

The 993s are thick castings, which you can safely shave to 69-70cc and get 9.5 on a near zero deck 350.
