Edelbrock 800 cfm carb. Or maybe an Holley 850 DP AD.
What camshaft do you think fits me best? Its 95% street and 5% strip. I want a reliable street car. How big horsepower differense does the two cams have?
Thanks Kristoffer
Grumpy 427 06-23-2007, 09:21:21 AM I sold my 427 last year, just to give you an idea here is the parts list that were in it.

80'427 06-23-2007, 10:56:40 AM The short block you have is very similar to what I have with the exception to the pistions I have SRP that make very similar compression.
This is the cam I am using but mine is more 50/50 street strip.

We need to know more about your car before picking a cam. The rest looks good. I would use the holley but I am sure we will hear from others that like the edelbrock. There could be a pretty big difference between the 2 cams you have picked.
This is what my cars spec are. It made 475 at the wheels. My current best is a 7.22 in the 1/8 which depending on the calculator is approx equal to a 11.22.

My goal is to run a middle or low 11 s on the 1/4 mile. But as I sayd, its a 95% street car.

old blue 75 06-23-2007, 06:20:42 PM 80'427 How much traction do you get off the line? If it is good have
you ever broken your 4 speed? I have a alum. case st-10 just wondering
about the strength of it.:bowtie:
80'427 06-23-2007, 08:20:38 PM It pulls the front about 4" but I think there is more to be had with a slick for manuals an some chassis tuning (pulls a 1.633 60 ft). Never broke mine but only have a few passes right now. If it is a richmond case you are ok and if it is stock for your car the gears don't load the bw case that hard so you should be OK. I started with a 3.42 first and it never broke but they are easy to break.
Dyno_Ron 06-23-2007, 10:04:51 PM If you have a good tune and traction, I don't see how you keep from the 11's, probably even low 11's.

80'427 06-23-2007, 10:42:15 PM If I was going to street that engine I would pick the smaller of the 2 cams to keep the idle down and stall size required acceptable. Remember if you have a solid roller you should have a stud girtle or shaft mounted rockers. The gridle requires tall valve covers which are hard to remove with a brake booster.
Grumpy 427 06-23-2007, 11:40:08 PM With a 3700 lb car and what your building, you will be running mid 12's. What is the altitude like in your part of the world?

Grumpy -- was that 3500# with you in it?

Yes, I have stud girtles right now on my 408 BB. And I got modified valve covers so it fits with the brake booster.
How much horsepower do you think I will lose with the smaller cam? But maybe a got the horsepower at lower RPM than the XR280R cam, and that is what I want om the street.
Here is a combo on a -68 nova with 408bb, and it leaves 507 hp on the dyno. Runs 11,76 with TH400 10" converter and 3.90 in the rear.
396" .060 to 408"
"702" ovalport with 1.88/2.19 Manley onepiece
10:1 comp forged TRW/Speedpro
3/8 rods with ARP wavelock
Originalforged crank with ARP
Comp streetroller XR274 R10 lift .639/.646 .050 dur 236/242
Comp rollerlifters vertical
Comp 929 springs
Harland sharp rollerrockers alu
Dynagear trueroller
Edelbrock performer RPM intake
Holley 750 vac /4150
Hooker competition 2"/3,5"
So with the same comp and camshaft, And more cubes (427) Singleplane intake, brodix race-rites.......the 427 must be capable of more then 507 hp? And run my car in a middle 11s? I really dont want to build an expensive engine, and then not make an 11s in the 1/4 mile :)
Thanks Kristoffer
pdq67 06-24-2007, 11:51:32 AM Imho, ebay your rotating assembly and buy 496 rotating assembly from here.
http://www.ohiocrank.com/chevy_rotating.html
Their $1295 forged flat-top pistoned kit along w/ a pair of -206 closed chambered heads and .020" thick shim headgaskets will create like a 9.3 to 1 CR. engine so a mild cam like a good old CC 282S solid should make abut 540 or so hp EASY!!
My 9.8 CR 496 per D2k should make 550hp at 5500 rpm and 580t at 4500 rpm.
It's just a mild motor!! I just call her my great big "tow-truck" motor!!
I figure w/ no more than a bigger cam, I will make about a 100 more hp when I later get bit by the dreaded, "More power, Scottie" bug...

Grumpy 427 06-24-2007, 12:03:19 PM Grumpy -- was that 3500# with you in it?
Yes that was 3500 lbs with me in it. the car was set up to run better on nitrous than on motor only. With a looser converter and more gear, i would of been down into the low 11's with the old motor.
80'427 06-24-2007, 12:08:28 PM I guess is it depends what you really care about. I street mine but I will put up with a lot for a little better time. If you want 11s for sure use the bigger cam but use at least the 3.90 gear it recommends and a 3000 or better stall. Then you should be there.
70RS/SS396 06-24-2007, 02:06:02 PM Okey, do you think I will loose more on the street whith the bigger cam? On the other side I dont want TOO much power at low RPM on the street because it will blow up the tires, and lost traction.
80'427 06-24-2007, 02:15:41 PM You are going to have traction problems it is a bbc
This is mine, though I did help it a bit.

Your engine...475 hp at the wheels....how much is that on the flywheel?
70RS/SS396 06-24-2007, 02:32:19 PM With a 3700 lb car and what your building, you will be running mid 12's. What is the altitude like in your part of the world?
Sorry, im not so good at english....what do you mean with "What is the altitude like in your part of the world?"
Grumpy 427 06-24-2007, 03:43:13 PM here in Saskatchewan where i live, we are at 1800 feet above sea level. The air is not too bad. As we go west towards the mountains, the altiture gets higher and there is less oxygen to burn in the motor, so the car runs slower. As we go easr the air gets better as we get closer to sea level.
I just wanted to know what the altitude and air was like there for your car to run? As far as what your HP will be? Its a guess unless you put the motor on a dyno. I posted my old 427 combo, and the dyno results for you just to give you an idea. But still Hp can be ballparked by knowing the weight of the car and the MPH in the quarter mile.

Okey, you mean that altitude. We are about 1000 feet above the sea level.
80'427 06-25-2007, 12:35:09 AM The chassis dyno operators say the 475 is = to about 660. I think that is high and think it is more like 550.
70RS/SS396 06-25-2007, 11:15:37 AM Okey, what do I need to do to reach 11.3-5 s - 1/4 mile? With 3.73 and 3000+ stall converter? Is it possible with a 427 and not have like 4.11 and 4000+ stall converter?
ZS10 06-25-2007, 02:42:12 PM With the engine listed in your first post, I don't think 11.3s are out of reach with 3.73 and 3000 stall.
Get the engine well tuned, a well built trans, and keep the car light.

Okey, thank you. Which cam do you mean? the 274 or 280?
Thanks
