View Full Version : Negative battery cable location
steve80 10-20-2005, 04:52:00 PM I was curious as to where the negative cable was placed on your car. The previous owner of my car bolted it to the passenger side header. Well, you can imagine how well the heat helps the corrosion. I would like to move the cable to a place where it doesn't immediately rust up, but I'm not sure where that might be. Should I just slather dielectric grease all over it? Can that even get hot?
manicmechanic 10-20-2005, 05:04:00 PM I moved my 80's from the Alt bracket directly to the front block where the air pump used to bolt up to. I would recommend you move it off the header for sure.

V8PunkRocket 10-20-2005, 05:58:00 PM Mine is right where maniacmechanic's is.
DirtyScotty 10-20-2005, 06:34:00 PM I bolted mine to the front of the cylinder head.
RS_SS350 10-20-2005, 07:24:00 PM had to put an aftermarket alt bracket on because of my intake, so just connected it to the block, like the two fellas above
night rider 10-21-2005, 02:24:00 AM I wanted a cleaner look to the engine bay, so I moved mine down low on the block.
If you look at the pass. side of block, right in front of fuel pump theres a bolt, then a bolt hole under that.. I cleaned the paint off from around the empty bolt hole, and put a short bolt in there with my ground cable loop under the bolt's head
Boogeyman 10-21-2005, 02:40:00 AM Bolt it to the passenger side fender and to a convenient place on the block
That is what factory did in the days. And which is electrically correct
steve80 10-21-2005, 09:18:00 AM Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll check out the block near the fuel pump.
I do have a wire going from the negative battery terminal to the spot on the passenger fender. That alone actually improved my voltage when there was a decent amount of load on the system.
Can anybody recommend good battery cables? I know mine should be replaced.
sikzdrivr 10-21-2005, 09:57:00 AM One to the alt. bracket and one to the fender to a 1/2" stainless steel bolt I mounted. I used I believe 6gauge, pheonix gold ground cable and ss loops. Have'nt had any power problems.

On his 80, the factory had it to the fender and the alternator bracket. The block is a great alternative mounting point and helps get that big cable out of sight. That area under the hood looks even more cluttered if you have AC hoses running through there.

ditto. If you want it to look nice, get some nice silver braided 6 gauge or larger and make it a feature instead of hiding it away http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
manicmechanic 10-21-2005, 06:05:00 PM Also be sure you get a sidepost (if that is what your using) that has the insulation around the head of the cable. I recently replaced mine and all the parts houses had these aftermarket cables without the rubber on the head. I had to get a premium cable from NAPA, and it was in the parts book not in the isle.
