View Full Version : crate 454 question. (lo-po)
Jim Mac 06-20-2007, 11:59:35 PM going to look at a burb with a supposedly crate 454, I imagine its a stock replacement motor, in a 86. If the truck had a peanut port big block originally, is the replacement motors from gm peanut port as well? Im thinking of using the motor for my camaro. Did the 86s have a serpentine setup? hydroboost? its a 3/4 ton with a full floater rear, 4.11 detroit locker. anything else usefull from a burb? im using the factory bucket for my jimmy. along with the tilt. thanks jim

rscamaro73 06-21-2007, 05:33:45 PM I think 86 was the swap year, as I had an 84 and it was still V-belts.
Whatever you can yank off and sell to offset the initial purchase - hit it up.
And yes, its prolly a peanut port, but they're not no where as bad as some people think (mine is and its still enough to roast tires easily).
Congrats and welcome to the Dark Side....
Air_Adam 06-21-2007, 06:42:14 PM Peanuts aren't that bad, especially on the smaller BBC like the 396 and 427. They are still 200cc intake ports, which will support a good bit of power.
Jim Mac 06-21-2007, 06:42:16 PM after thinking about it for a half a day, I decided against it
If I didnt have 3 other big blocks to build, it would be a great deal, but Ive already got a std block, crank, truck rods, action plus intake, and a set of 781s.
for a grand I can probably get the thing together the way I want it.
ive already got all the pulleys and brackets.
also have another 454 that needs rebuild.
not to mention a 10.5 to 1 396 short block.
Lastly I had to promise my wife, if I got it, Id have to have it stripped and the body gone by monday. So id have to keep it rolling to give the body away. I called a few wreckers today. they all told me the rear ends out of these arent selling, and they arent getting any calls for them. Jim
80'427 06-22-2007, 09:57:47 AM Thats what they always say when ever I have something to sell. Good idea to use what you have first. I tend to look for stuff that I already have laying in my garage. Why I think I need to corner the market on bbc is beyond me but I would like to have a garage full.
Jim Mac 06-23-2007, 12:12:46 AM The hardest part for me is to actually spend the money on parts. I got into a habit of not buying anything I dont plan on selling. So I hate to get upside down in anything. However Ive had my camaro for almost 30 years, so Im not planning on selling it anytime soon. And if Im ever going to go to the dark side, its not going to get a stock truck 454 like my chevelle. I want a little compression, cam, decent heads. Jim
pdq67 06-23-2007, 06:55:49 PM Jim,
A stock, flat-top pistoned 454 P/U engine will be down around 7.9 to 8 to 1 CR!!
Add a set of early closed chambered heads like the old -206's and use .020" thick steel shim headgaskets and it come's up to like 9.27 CR. or so!!
Great for a decent MILD street cam so that you can still run pee for gas..

JBcamaro 06-23-2007, 07:08:31 PM Hey, speaking of big blocks, I know a guy who has a 454 and a 400 tranny he wants 1,000 for. He said he pulled it out of a motor home with like 50,000 miles on it. Its a complete motor ready to drop in. Is it worth buying and putting it in my camaro as is? My car has a small block now, how much trouble is the process in changing everything over.
Just curious, thanks

None of the small block brackets will work with the big block, otherwise it's R&R if a couple of hours.
Jim Mac 06-24-2007, 10:18:41 AM what year camaro? early 70s ones use a different frame mounts if not the motor sits high, hopefully the guy pulled it with all the brackets. The one I wanted was more than likely a peanut port headed motor. I didnt need the tranny, and if it was a partial serpentine setup I didnt want to use it, So I would have been paying $1000 for a shortblock basically. jim
80'427 06-24-2007, 01:14:07 PM Mine has small block mounts and works just fine.
JBcamaro 06-24-2007, 09:25:00 PM My camaro is a 70. I was just curious, I have never owned a big block before.
Jim Mac 06-24-2007, 11:16:32 PM on a 70 the big block will bolt up, but if you dont get the big block frame mounts youll have header fitment issues, plus you will have to cut a hole in the hood. jim
