Just started tearing down a 350 LT-1 from a '71 Z28. Engine block and heads are correct for this model year, found solid lifters, stock rockers and pushrods, but cam does not appear to be original.

The cam has "CAL CAMS" and "284S" stamped on the back surface.

Anyone familiar with this manufacturer / cam? I am interested in the specs to see how they compare to the factory cam for this engine.

Any information is appreciated.

Jim:

Thanks for the lead.

The cam specs you list is very close to the factory cam grind, so this is starting to make sense.

Paul,

Cal Cams was a grinder that used to do custom grinds and had many off-the shelf grinds ready to go. They were in the Oakland area of California many years ago and actually had a fairly good reputation.

I haven't heard about them since the 80's so I don't think they are still around.

I might still have one of their old catalogs so I'll try to look up the grind # and let you know if I find anything.
