I just got a new set of valve covers, Pro form, real nice. I'm putting them on a new Small block crate engine. My question, they do not have a hole for a pcv valve...or an oil fill...what do I do? Do I need a pcv valve? I'm sure I can drill a hole in it (ouch:o ) and put in a pcv, and use it also for oil fill....what would you all reccomend.....Thanks !!!

You drill a hole in the left and right side. One side gets a PCV valve and the other a breather. A baffle kit under the hole such as those sold by Moroso should also be used on either side.

It's standard operating procedure on many valve covers.

Yes, you need to have a PCV system.

Why do you need a PCV AND a breather ? I understand the PCV.

Why do you need a PCV AND a breather ? I understand the PCV.

The breather takes in clean air into the crankcase by a vacuum created by the pcv. This clean air pushes all the gases that get by the rings along with the pressure created in the crankcase to the pcv which is the vacuum source. Basically the breather is an inlet and the pcv is the outlet.

You really need the fresh air to flow through the crankcase to remove fuel vapors. That's why you'd install a breather in one valve cover and the PCV in the other.
