I'm not really a BBC guy, but was maybe going to start learning about them.
Is a 366 a gas engine, and how come you never hear of them?
Is there anybody here running one?

Keep the crank ... throw away the rest. Same stroke but its a smaller bore GM 366 big block "Dump Truck" engine not a hipo piece at all. The crank is or could possibly be a rare factory nitrided!!! 396/427 steel version. To my knowledge GM never nitrided any of the LS-6/7 real hot rod cranks, just these lowly dump truck ones. They made a 427 "Dump Truck" engine with that nitrided crank as well.

Yes, supposedly the cranks are the things to keep. It's what I'm using in my combination. We looked up the code and apparently the crank is of the "non-twist" variety.

Is that true???

Save the rods too. They are some of the better stock rods "truck rods" as they are called. I have a 366 crank in my 427. Paid $125 for it and it is nitrited. We have 2 366s in our grain trucks one is a DOG and will bearly pull 55 when loaded the other will go faster than the brakes can handle 65+. Of course these are trucks that are hauling 31000lbs or 15.5 tons, not to bad for only more 16 ci on a 350. With the right pistons (most are 7.5-8) they could make a good towing engine but they are heavy heavy. The intake must weigh 50-60lbs. I have heard you can bore them .250 over but that would still only make it a 414 or so. Plus you would have to have special rods to use the 60 over 402 pistions.

Keep the rods, crank, and main caps for sure. If you want to build a torque monster the heads CC at about 100. Cut the valve seats from the 1.88/1.66 to stock 2.065/1.72 sizes and bowl blend.

Keep the bottom end and scrap the rest. No need in building a near 600 lb. engine when you can build a bored over 350 at 100-150 lbs. less!

Theyn are definitely a STRONG engine, but lack cubes for performance. For a dumptruck they are awesome!
