I have a 1970 RS w/BBC that I need a new battery for. The car is not on the road yet, but I need to run the engine. I want to know what the biggest battery I can fit in the stock battery tray under the hood is. I don't care if its posts or side mount as I will be making up new wires.

you just need the most reserve minutes not the biggest size.

Biggest aint always the best. Like GMPARTS 1 said... More reserve minutes not size.
The big battery will just add alot of extra un-needed nose weight to an already nose heavy car.
I was killing big. reg. batteries about once a year in my truck and camaro. I got tired of having to recharge them, so I bought an optima red top about 1.5 years ago.. Even went down 1 size to save alittle weight..
I aint had a prob out of it in that 1.5 years.
It's got as low as 10.9 volts (once) and still cranked my 10.18:1 355 engine.
The $100-130 may seem like alot for a battery but it's very worth it.
I can't remember the member's name, but a guy on here went to an optima yellow top battery sized for little honda cars in his camaro and it works good for him

Unless you're racing just get a Diehard that will fit in the tray and it will last you 5 to 7 years if you don't let it go dead to often.

The Diehard is a quality battery. BUT, if you have the cash you may want to look into the Optima battery. Saves a LOT of weight. My buddy just got one and you can lift it by the handle with 2 fingers.

I'm using the Group 51 (Civic size) Yellow Top. But, my 350 is 9:1, and I'm using a gear reduction starter, so it cranks pretty easy. It has been tested at 8*F in January, after sitting for 3 weeks. It worked. http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif
26lbs. A big Group 34/78 will be twice that.
500CCA is plenty, if you have:
1. Gear Reduction starter.
2. Good wiring connections.

You may Consider an Optima. VERY light and has a lot of reserve!
