i want to rebuild my qjet (a 1980 chevy/gmc truck carb #17080206), but i need some advice on what to do.

it's leaking fuel so the minimum i need is a gasket kit ($25 from carbs.net). i was also thinking i might want to get some jets and tune it a little.

i saw a master strip kit at www.carbs.net (http://www.carbs.net) for $90. it contains the following:
Jet sizes 68-74 (14 Jets)
(jet range can adjusted)
High Flow Needle & Seat
3 pairs Secondary Rods
1 Secondary Hanger
Spring Set
Secondary Cam
Fuel Fitting Gaskets
Accelerator Pump Cups

am i going need all this? or should i just get a kit that contains only the jets? is there anything else i'm going to need besides the gasket kit?

Charlie,
You probably want to get you a copy of HP books Rochester Carburetors by Doug Roe. (Amazon.com)The Haynes Rochester Carb. book is also pretty good. Then you can figure what you want to fool with and what to avoid.
Those things are pretty easy to screw up, like bent metering rods and putting the inside choke arm back together is really a pain.
IMO if it's working OK fix the leak and leave it alone. If you have any questions that I can find for you in the books, let me know, as I have both of them.
D.
BTW how did your flowtechs fit on the passenger side--floorpan clearance that is?

I bought my rebuild kit from a local parts store for around $20 bucks and bought metering rods and jets seperately. Turns out cheaper and you get everything you need to rebuild the carb.

i can't buy locally, i'm in europe so i need to get my stuff through the internet and preferably all from one shop as overseas orders often get an extra $10 to $25 handling fee.

flyguy -> i'll have a look at header fitment tomorrow and let you know.

Damon is the man when it comes to rebuilding Q's.

this is what I gathered from his suggestions so far, I hope that I dont confuse you too much.

For a stock set up do some research on this board and you should find his suggestions for jets and hangers etc. But I would probably just rebuild the unit you have for stock and include a good tuning for the secondary's. Especially if you have not had any problems with it to date. I really do not think you need all that from that $90 kit unless you are performance tuning or dragracing.

Oh yeah you're in europe. I completely forgot.
I agree with CamaroZ, a $90 kit is probably unecessary. I didn't spend any more then maybe $30 bucks when I rebuilt mine. My kit contained all my gaskets, accel pump cup, needle and seat, springs and some other little things I can't remember. I ordered my secondary rods, jets and hanger seperately.

By the way, can I hear your band again?

this is what i got from another post here..

Primary jets: 76
Primary rods: 44
('B' rods if it's got an old divorced-style choke, 'K' rods if it's got the round choke element on the side of it)
Secondary rods: DR
Secondary hanger: G
Secondary air valve tension spring: 3/4 turn from zero tension

maybe that 'll work for me too, i'm only getting a cam change and have some headers..

How are the throttle shafts? Any play in them? Any noticable sticking of the throttle on the primary? If so, you need to put bush the shaft properly to repair the problem.

the throttle response felt ok when i last drove it. (edit) actually it did bog a little when flooring it.

it was just running somewhat lean and leaking. probably because it had been used with LPG as fuel for sometime before i got the engine + carb.

i'll clean the carb, change the gaskets, put it all back together, run it and tune it a little with the mixture screws and then i'll see about jetting for my application (or at least that's what i'm planning on doing).

Your band's pretty good Charlie. I really like "These Words". Nice fast punk. Let me know when I can hear some more stuff.

Start with the gasket kit and install a new float too. (The NAPA kit doesn't come with one.)

While you have the top off run a fine wire through the small ports for the idle circuit. If these suckers are plugged, you won't get any idle mixture screw response.
See pic at the end of this posting... http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/013631-2.html

I just rebuilt a Q-jet (17080204) a month ago. Pretty much the same animal as yours. I was successful in getting everything working on it properly. Mine needed bushings installed on the primary throttle shaft because I had a vacuum leak.

You can do it. If you run into problems, E-mail me. This process is still pretty fresh in my mind.

BTW... the stumble on WOT might be your secondaries opening too quickly. I had to adjust the secondary wind-up spring to require a little more vacuum before the secondary side opened.

I found my secondary rods were not the stock ones. I replaced them for the stock "CH"rods and got an improvement over the "DA" rods that were in it when I bought it.

Lots of good info at this link too... http://nastyz28.com/~ericf/id18.htm

Good Luck!
