ok first forgive my lack of chevy eng knowledge it's been a while like 12 years since i messed with a chevy. now i bought my 78 camaro it has a 383 in it. i have heard you need to clearance the rods so they don't hit the camshaft. i'm swapping heads cam and intake on this 383 i have since the cam is a whimpy littlre rv cam and the heads are 76cc chamber 882 castings.
now will i need to worry about the larger camshaft possibly having clearance issues with the rods? or is a small base circle hyd roller cam a solution to my possible problem?

YES, you need to worry about it. Things get pretty ugly if you don't. Chances are everything will clear, but chances are the same that they won't. And there is only ONE WAY to find out for sure.

Hydraulic roller cams have less clearance than a flat tappet due to the much larger width lobe.

So they do make small base circle hydraulic roller cams for this app? I'm turning my 350 into a 383 just as soon as its time for a rebuild.

yes the retrofit cams are small base cirrcle but you have to buy the $400 hyd roller link bar lifters too.

Thank you for the pics. I'd rather not hassle with a small base circle cam. Do the rods need clearanced on both corners or just the one side like in your pics?

just on the one side towards the cam. As you can see its really not a large amount of material to be removed. I prefer to use a std base circle cam also.

I built a 383 with a scat 5.7" rod kit, and out of the box it cleared but two rods came very close to the cam (.020"). Pretty easy to grind the clearance.

it's already been ground for clearance with the small rv cam thats in it my fear is that it may not be ground down engoug for a big cam to clear
