What exactly is required to swap one of these 4th gen powertrains into a 2nd?

I assume a late model transmission is required along with the motor to provide the necessary sensor information?

How about O2 sensors? Is it possible to run dual high flow exhaust when the 4th gen ran with cats and presumably pre and post cat sensors?

And so on... wheel speed sensors?
Is it possible to take a complete computer + powertrain out of an Lt1/Ls1 equipped vehicle and make it work or are aftermarket programming/computers required?

thanks for any info / links http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

If I remember right someone makes an intake manifold for the LT1 so you can run a Carb. The LT1 alsoo has the standard chevy tranny bolt pattern. If you can bolt a T56 from a LT1 to a small block you should be able to bolt a TH350 or 400 to the LT1.Unless fuel injection is a must for you I would look for that other option.

Although there are differences between an LT1 and an LS1 swap there are also important similarities:

- You can use the stock computers after they have been reprogrammed

- You can use the stock wiring harnesses. Many of the wires in a stock harness are not needed for a retrofit.

- You can use old school trannies behind these engines but, again, the computer has to be programmed for this circumstance.

- There are many vendors that can modify a stock harness and reprogram the computer for you if you don't want to take the time to delve into the specifics yourself

- You should have a good reason for ditching either the fuel injection or the overdrive trannies that come with 4gen engines because without those two key features you might as well build an old school engine. In most cases, the entire point of making the swap is to pick up fuel injection and overdrive.

- The "hardest" part is the pressurized fuel system.

- The wiring is easier than it appears. Yes, there are lots of wires, but most of them simply plug into each other via foolproof (almost) connectors. A properly prepared LS1 harness only has 4 or 5 wires which need to be connected outside the harness (battery, ignition, ground, fuel pump, cooling fans).

The LS1 is the "better" engine but you need to address the motor mounts which are a non-issue with an LT1.

"In most cases, the entire point of making the swap is to pick up fuel injection and overdrive"

bingo. 80-90 canuckian dollars a tank hurts- and if I can pick up fuel economy AND power...

Anyone reccommend a specific car to tear a motor out of?

LT-1 93-97 Camaro, firebird, caprice or Impala. LS-1 Camaro, Firebird. Newer chevy trucks had a few diff size motors all LS-1 versions
