Damon 09-28-2005, 10:28:00 AM Yeah, GM rates them at 440HP- 15 more than the standard 454HO it's based on, owing to the better flowing aluminum heads they put on them. I'd have to beleive that would be at least a mid 12 second ride with any kind of traction and in reasonably good tune. 1981Z28_454 09-28-2005, 01:22:00 PM I think some pictures are in order... I want to see this ZZ454 before I start giving opinions on times... Also, what gears are you running? And what kind of meats do you have on your ride? Damon 09-28-2005, 02:05:00 PM Ask and you shall recieve: http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/120/products/156333/ZZ454-440-440-Horsepower-454-Engine-with-Aluminum-Heads.htm Damon 09-28-2005, 02:33:00 PM BTW- GM rates their crate engines the way they rate their production engines- to SAE standards. That means they're usually a smidge conservative vs. how the aftermarket usually rates them. It wouldn't surprise me if that engine pulled more like 460-470 on the local machine shop's dyno. victtor 09-28-2005, 05:20:00 PM HI YES DAMON IS RIGHT THE GM CRATE MOTORS ARE UNDERATED IN THE HORSEPOWER FIGURES THEY GIVE OUT THEY RATE THEM AT 440HP IF YOU CET HOT ROD MAG EVERY MONTH THEY HAVE BEEN RUNNING A ARTICLE CALLED EVERY TRICK IN THE BOOK THEY TOOK A ZZ454 PUT COMP CAMS XR282HR BEHIVE VALVE SPRINGS COMP ROCKERS AIRGAP MANIFOLD 850 CARB AND MADE 535HP-560FTLBS MY 75 CAMARO HAS 3.42 10 BOLT TH400 3000 STALL WAS HOPEING TWO GET INTO THE 11SEC RANGE WITH A 150 SHOT OFF NOS WILL USE DRAG RADIALS HEY THANKS FOR THE INFO I LIVE IN A LITTLE PLACE CALLED NEW ZEALAND NOT ALOT OFF CAMAROS HERE WE LOVE EM AMERICAN CARS Damon 09-28-2005, 06:20:00 PM I think you stand a modest chance of hitting 11s just on the stock crate engine just as it comes from GM if you can get a good launch. With the upgrades that you mentioned (cam, springs, intake, etc.) I think you're there for sure. With nitrous (even on the stock motor) it's an absolute no-brainer. badazz81z28 09-29-2005, 06:09:00 PM I have heard. (just heard) that the 454 and the 502 motors are not worth the $$ Burt 09-29-2005, 08:18:00 PM Hey Victor, How about getting rid of the upper-case. It is somewhat irritating to read. (just heard) that the 454 and the 502 motors are not worth the $$ My neibor has a 502/502 513's 3,000 stall Full weight street car on slicks ran 1.67-7.51 eigth mile, But i've heard the cam holds them back? Mwilson 09-29-2005, 09:49:00 PM BTW its a 70 Z28 Damon 09-30-2005, 02:57:00 PM The 454 HO and ZZ-454 use a smallish 211/230* hyd. roller with a VERY large duration split between intake and exhaust. The 502HP ZZ-502 uses an only slightly larger 224/234* hyd. roller cam. Like most factory rate engines, the cams are not super wild for many reasons, including the extensive longevity testing the motors must pass. Yes, you could probably add a fir bit of HP if you shoved in a roller with more duration and lift. |
