Started The new eingine tonight. Sounds great. Its a 383 with 9.7-1 comp ratio and a 274 XE comp cam flat tappet. Has some snap to it. More than I would think. We will see on the open road. OR in front of my house. LOL.

if its a new engine run it easy for the first 500-1000 miles or so... no more than 3000-3500RPM...

after that you can really get into the power

LOL. I dont think I can wait that long. I have about 20kms on it right now and just HAD to leave 2 nice black stripes up my driveway! They didnt turn out as straight as I had liked. Oh well. I will have to try again.

I'll jump in & join the new engine club.
I just fired my new 409sb tonight. The jump in cubes from a 355 really changed the exhaust tone, it's a much deeper rumble now.

I'll spend the next week tuning & putting some miles on it but I'll be back at the race track next Friday.

I might get flammed for this but this is my opinion on engine break in, and how I have always done it.

For street engines....

AS you know the 20-30 min to 2000-3000 rpm cam break in, change oil and filter

Drive down the road at 30 mph then step on throttle kinda hard, (not flooring it though) till 60 mph and take foot off throttle. Let it coast back down to 30, then step on it again to 60. Do that 5 times

Come home, change oil and filter again.

Drive it 500 miles at under 3,000 rpm. No full throttle, no burning rubber, etc.

Change oil and filter

Drive it 500 more miles at under 4500 rpm. Don't baby it, but don't dog it. You can get on it alittle for the gear shifts, but still no full throttle pulls, no burn outs, etc

Change oil and filter.

No you can give it hell.

If it's a race engine only.. Break cam in like norm. Then load her up on the trailer and "break her in" in the water box.

The diff in the 2 engines are, race engines gets pulled down and re freashed alot. Atleast once a year for budget type racers.

Street engines needs to last 80, 90, 120, 140, 160K miles

Started my ebay 383 on Thursday, drove it a few miles today. Runs good so far. One thing I was worried about would be the cam was too small, going by the specs the builder gave me. I wanted a bit of a nastyz28 idle, but I wanted the throttle response of a stock cam with low end torque. Well she be shitty idling and other than timing set and idle speed adjusted it has great bottom end response.
I went from a 229 to a 383 and had a few issues. The motor mounts set the engine up too high, about 1 1/2 inch. I had used mounts and brackets from a 75 v8 nova and got brand new ones from GM, they both were the same. Had to mod the brackets to drop it. And after running about a 1/2 hour my brand new holley pump took a dump, so I bought bought an el-cheapo pulsating pump to use till I get the holley exchanged. And now my p/s pump is leaking, hope I can find a seal kit Monday. NO MORE PUSHING! http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

Oh, on my second shake down run I had a Nissan with a spoiler and wheels pull up to the inside lane. I don't know his exact intentions, but I think any thoughts of pulling a bonzi on me were gone well before the light changed.

Edit: The front end sits up higher now, looks like i lost some weight.

As sad as this may sound. ONe of my big motivators to get this car running was NOT HAVING TO PUSH THE CAR IN AND OUT OF THE GARAGE. I figured while I was there I may as well add some horses to the stable. Just have to get the proper headers on to put some miles on her. Headers should be in this week. Been waiting 2 straight weeks now.
