View Full Version : whats a good muffler
rindoze 06-07-2007, 04:31:32 PM Getting ready to put a new exhaust in my car cause the old ones too loud. I was looking at the pypes system but it's to expensive for me without that deal thing they used to have. So question is anyone know a good muffler to use for a 3 inch exhaust system? I wan't one that isn't insanely loud like the ones I have now but still a bit aggressive sounding. What have yall used?

I believe its still available, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
GoldenOne7710 06-07-2007, 06:03:40 PM I've used Hooker Super Comp mufflers before. They had an nice aggressive grunt to them but weren't too loud. They really had a nice deep rumble at idle. I don't know if you can get them in a 3" or not. Not bad priced either.
1FstChevy 06-07-2007, 06:20:48 PM Well... lets see I have Rhino mufflers, where they came from IDK but they sound great, and different from anything else, but then again I'm pushing a decent amount of power so it might vary.
Magnaflows are very high quality mufflers that seem to last forever with the Stainless Steel, however, I recently put a dual magnaflow setup on my X-body and I really don't like the general Magnaflow tone (which is a little what I was expecting) sounds alright while giving it beyond 50% throttle but otherwise its somewhat raspy. But some of this may be my personal taste with lower exhaust tones since others seem to like it. try www.performancepeddler.com thats where I bought my 2 mufflers and they are by far the lowest price sellers especially with the wholesale eBay code you can use.
Now i have never personally seen the Pypes system or heard it, but from the way people talk about it, it seems to be a pretty good quality setup all ready to go for our 2nd Gen F-bodies, and I'm betting it sounds good as well but perhaps some folks with first hand experience will chime in.
craigblock 06-07-2007, 09:32:12 PM I don't see a 3 inch exhaust system ever being anything but very loud.
I have Dynomax Super Turbos on my car and I like how they sound. They don't have that "tunnel" sound that flowmasters have, and they are silent under part throttle.
Smokin70SS 06-08-2007, 04:49:09 AM I'm partial to SpinTech. I have a sound clip of the Sportsman Streets on my website with a 3" inch exhaust dumped at the axle. Not too loud at all with a mild 10.3:1 383 with 236* Dur @ .050" and 110* LSA cam.
CamaroMan79 06-08-2007, 07:43:52 AM I run hooker aerochambers. Not too loud at crusing but sound good when u open it up.
Lowend 06-08-2007, 08:11:25 PM Borla Pro XS is excellent for the money and not too loud
74RAT 06-08-2007, 08:59:35 PM getting ready to try some dynomax ultra flows. a straight through design. will know soon.

I really dig the sound of your car. If mine sounds anything like that I'll be happy. I'm putting my Pypes exhaust in next weekend with Violator mufflers.

Got a catback system with those muffs on my B-body with LT1. I like how it sounds. Just a little on the loud side, but I have resonators too. Good sound, no resonation at all. Not what anybody would consider quiet though.
Turbo T/A 06-09-2007, 02:12:41 AM DYNOMAX ULTRAFLOW....that is the best muffler for a mild sound at cruise, very nice toned sound at WOT & one of THE BEST flowing mufflers on the market.
Had them on the old Z, and about to cut the Flowlessmasters off the new Firebird in favor of some Ultraflows.

Thanks - it wasn't very loud and sounded better in person. The tests (take that however you want) showed they flowed well and their pretty popular with the local racers. It's nice to have SpinTech being a local company. If anyones looking for deals on them, hit up the Dr.Gas website. Good deals and they ship straight from SpinTech.
Good luck with your Pypes system.
spaman 06-09-2007, 10:26:10 PM I get tons of comments on how good my exhaust sounds. I like the flowmaster 40 series black performance mufflers. They are the most aggressive units that flowmaster puts out
