Well we just finished up the 355 we were building. Right now I have number 1 on top dead center on the compression stroke. I am about to put the Mallory unilite in and I want to make sure I get it good enough to start the engine and make it run so I dont wipe the new voodoo cam.

Its been a while since I messed with distributors and for some reason I am at a loss here. On the unilite cap I dont know which plug is for the number 1 cylinder. Heck for some reason I cant figure out what to do at all to be honest. Its been over 8 years since I have done this.

Any help on this would be much appreciated! I just dont want to wipe my cam

EDIT: This is exactly what mine looks like. Is the black mark on the cap in this picture number 1?

Well here is another pic and this one it looks like they have a different plug marked?

Also in this pic you can see a red arrow pointing up. Is that the optical eye?

#1 can be anywhere, any post on the dist that you want it to be..

What matters is that you put the wire from #1 cyl to which every post on dist, then follow the right firing order after that..

1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2 clockwise

I norm put my #1 at 2 posts counter clockwise from the post with black mark on your cap. Just cause I feel it makes the plug wire routing alittle cleaner looking.

I have seen many people put #1 to the post that black line is on too.. It all works the same as long as you follow the firing order and got clockwise.

My guess as to that black line on your cap would be they marked their #1 so they wouldnt forget so they probbly used that post for #1

Oh yeah just to point out.. Driver's side back from to rear is #'s 1, 3, 5, 7 and pass side bank front to rear is 2, 4, 6, 8

if you have #1 on tdc, stab the distributor with the rotor about 2-1/4" off to the counter-clockwise so that it seats pointing at #1. Then, put the #1 wire on the post nearest to the rotor, usually the front-driver side corner.

Easy as pie!
