Two companies, both on ebay. One BES Racing Engines an the other J&C Enterprises both have remanufactured 601 heads. J&C says there is no reason to un-shroud the chambers when the larger valves are used if the machine work is done properly and the valves are installed at their correct height. BES un-shrouds theirs. Both bowl-hog their heads. What do you think Air Adam, pd67, or anyone else. Also, would 550 lift springs be to high for a 390/410 lift cam and should I use different springs. If I do change my cam, I'll be using something at 480 lift/exh or below for the street. I'll also have a chaffer put around the chamber as I was recomended in a earier thread. :)

Please add this to here if the Mod wants to make a "Sticky" out of it??

"head casting" thread....

And it probably need's to be renamed to maybe "Info on -601 heads"??

I beleive I got my set from BES. Mine are unshrouded a bit around the intake valve, as its a 1.94 instead of a 1.84 valve. If you look at a valve that size in the 601 chamber, its a fairly tight fit around the outside edge. While probably not totally necessary, unshrouding around this area would definitely be worthwhile. If the heads were planned, or even if they weren't actually, you'd do well to deburr the edges of the combustion chambers on the heads. Sharp edges can cause detonation problems, so just smooth them down a bit and you should be just fine. The edge of the chambers should feel about the same as the edge of a spoon - an obvious edge, but a really 'dull' edge.

The lift limit of the springs isn't an issue unless its too little and they bind up. What matters is the weight of the spring - how much seat pressure and how much at max lift of the cam (pressure at .550" is kinda meaningless if the cam tops out at .480" ya know?). My heads were cut to handle .550 lift and have some valvesprings which are a little bit heavier than what Comp Cams recommended for my cam (XE274 non-roller) but is pretty close. They work just fine with this cam.

If you go to 1.94" valves in a 601 casting head, you will gain flow if you unshroud them. The chambers are so small you won't really loose any compression.

601 castings are pretty good heads. If you port them yourself they are impossible to beat in the bang for the buck catagory.

For $399 + shipping they unshroud the chambers and bog-hog them for the 1.94/1.6 valves to work. I have to check and see what they do for valve guides. They can add pinned studs for $35.00 and they need you to call for a estimate for additional machining. They (BES) return your emails too. What kind of porting would be worth while doing. :)

The ones I got had the big intake valves, and screw-in studs and guideplates too. Definitely worth the extra money if you use a big 'stick and valve springs.
