Clean the block good, thats for sure. Id spray it with CRC electrical cleaner to evaporate any oil left, and for proper paint adhesion. Clean aint clean enough when it comes to paint over any kind of erl.

You can mask off or put old stuff on motor where you dont care about overspray- and for my money there is no engine rattle can paint that compares with Dupli Color Ceramic- the paint is brilliant and durable. It will bake on- unfortunatly, I only got to use it on my Ferd car, corporate ferd blue, and not on my prized Chebby BB

I rattle caned mine with VHT rattle can chevy orange about 10 years and about 25,000 miles ago. It shows some age, but overall it looks great.

Get it clean, and then clean it 2 more times. What works great is a high pressure grease cleaner that hooks up to an air compressor.

The time is in the prep. Spraying it takes a matter of minutes.

The last "rattle can" rebuild I did, I just painted with the same lacquer I used on the truck. Hogwashed the engine, changed the gaskets, took a rattle can to the engine. Had it for years and it always looked the same. Nothing easier to paint than a cast iron block. You almost can't run the paint either.
