View Full Version : Which electric fans for stock radiator? Will 3rd gen fans work?

Just bought a TPI/L98 and 700R4 out of a 1989 Formula Firebird, the owner is throwing in the dual electric fan setup along with the radiator. Will either/both of these fit into my 1979 Camaro?

If these will not fit, who makes a good electric fan setup for my stock radiator?

Thanks guys!

Joel

PS: I'll be photographing the swap so if anyone can tell me how to post pics on here I'll give y'all a nice show! :)

Only thing that sux about doing this swap is that I now have to sell the parts I bought for what I had planned on doing to it prior to this purchase. Oh well!

The fans will work on your stock rad, just gotta figure out a way to mount them..Not hard.. But DO NOT use those tie downs like the ones that come with tranny coolers.. The fans will vibrate and the straps will break the cooling fins causing your rad to leak.. Either make a custom shroud, or get some "L" brackets and mount it to the bottom of the radiator support and the top support..That's what i did.. Those ties that go through the radiator caused leaks in 2 radiators.. Think I would'a learned after the first time.. lol GL

Oh yeah, asaik, the 3rd gen will mount in your radiators location, just make sure you get a 3rd gen upper and lower hose..

Fans from a 4th gen will not only mount up easier (they are mounted to their own shroud instead of individual tripod legs like 3rd gens are) but they will move a ton more air as well.

Damon,

Great advice for the future but I'm getting the engine, transmission, radiator, and dual fan setup as a package deal, and only $1236 (That's shipped to my house). The engine's got 115K miles on it but those are all easy miles, and everything runs flawlessly! So for the time being, I'd really like to make use of what I'm paying for now.

Where can I get the proper L-brackets?

you can get some metal strips with holes in it every so often thats soft enough to easily fab but strong enough to hold into place. I know thats a pretty vague description but i dont know what that stuff is called. Should be able to find it at a hardware store, just get creative and think outside the box.

also not to hijack the thread but how long have you had that car? i went to high school in Antioch with a guy that had a car just like that.

I've had it for a few years now, bought it from the original owner who lives in Union City. The stock engine has less than 100k miles on it. I'll be selling it once I get the new one in there.

I used a 4th gen LT1 setup.

I let it idle for 20 minutes in 90*+ sun the other day. Never broke 180*. Simple Proliance radiator & DCC fan controller.

I made little brackets for the bottom:

I had the LT1 fans, but I ran really warm on hot days with the A/C on. I swapped to a Crown Victoria fan and have had much better results.

How many amps do the crown vic fans pull? For that matter how about the 3rd gen and 4th gen setups?

It regularly get to over 110° here. with A/C running the other day, my temps were 'tween 210 and 230. Could I get an electric fan as a "booster" for the stock one? Or would that restrict flow more than it would help?

I am using 03 impala fans fit with a little modifications to the shrould they come in. Keep my 427 right at 180 where the switch turns on.

Sell the 3rd gen Rad and fan setup, then get the 4th gen stuff.

Can you give me more info on this?

I was going to use the 3rd Gen fans but I broke one while moving parts around. So now that I'm again in the market for a fan setup I'm looking at either the fourth gen LT1 setup or an aftermarket setup. Any and all help would be appreciated... Damon, looks like I'm following your advice after all! ;)

I had the same setup in my 79z. I had a flex fan runnig off the waterpump, and when things got hot from sitting in traffic, I had a little electric fan pushing in on the rad. It helped out a bunch when the temps went up. I dont think it hurt the rad under normal circumstances either. I have the same setup as Bonzo has....just waiting to go in.

I have the 4th gen LT1 fans in my car with a DC controller. I couldn't ask for a better fit. It was one of the easiest parts of the whole job. (so far) I installed them almost exactly like Bonzo. It's really that easy.

Late 80's Suburbans with the a 454 tow package came with an auxiliary fan. It's like an 8in fan, but it kicks some air. I tried it on my diesel burb that was running hot going up the mountain and it dropped the temp 15 degrees.

I agree with the 4th gen fans. They worked great until my dc controller went out. :whine:

ROLFMAO My girlfriend just read this over my shoulder and said "Awwwe, poor guy.... What's a DC controller?" That was too funny :D

Okay, so I just scored an LT1 fan setup in mint condition off of ebay for only $40 + S&H, only thing is that it's missing those rubber vent flaps, is this an issue? If so, where can I get some replacements?

For the record, we had no luck getting LT1 fans to fit with a big block. See here for discussion:
http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128089&highlight=LT1+fan

Reading though Penix's thread here, I see nobody specified big block or small block and not everyone indicates which engine they have in their profile.

Go to any Chevy dealer parts department, they are still available. I am putting the LT1 fan setup on my 82 Z-28 with the Flexalite adjustable fan controller #31165, it doesn't hit the electrical with the big voltage drop upon starting of the fans, it brings them on at 60% power and increases as temps rise.

You need to run a mid mount alt. bracket, and it will solve the problem. I have a Alan Grove bracket, cheap and simple.

I have the LT1 fans and I run a BBC. It's tighter than when I ran a SBC, but it still fits and works great. I am running a V/Serpentine belt combo water pump pulley and this is why it's so close. Just maneuver the fans into the spot they were almost made for. :) One of the fan motors fit in between the Alt belt, water pump, and crank. As seen in the picture below.

I run a 30 amp relay for each fan, and 25 amp fuses. They will pop a 20 amp fuse every once in a while on startup. Just FYI.
