I recently replaced my starter and ran for about a week. A few days ago I was at a gas pump and when I went to turn the car back on it would give me the click noise like it was trying but it wouldn't turn. I got a jump and made it home. I then went under the hood and noticed my starter to battery wire was touching the headers and was a little chared. It wasn't all that bad so I wrap it in electrical tape and routed it off the header. It still wont turn over. Do I need a new wire or is the problem elsewhere?

My first guess would be the battery. Put a charger on it and see if it will start and hold a charge.

i say battery or alternator for sure.
goto autozone and have em both tested. hopefully just a battery.
my OFFICIAL guess tho, is an alternator.

I had problems with the clicking as well just recently.
You can also check the 2 wires going to the starter and see if they were too close to your headers as well.
Also, check the 2 wires going to the alternator and see if there's any rips or if that prong is seated securely. I had the same problem with my 71.

The battery isn't enven a month old but the alternator is pretty old.
The two other wires going to the alt seem to be ok as their in the heat sheild. I guess I will go through them again to make sure.
Is it possible that the battery/starter wire is so burnt up that it can't carry enough voltage to get the car started?
Are there any ways to check the alt withouth removing it and taking it to the store?

i always thought u could drive it up there and they check it in the car. might be wrong tho...

to really test the alternator, they usually need to take it out and put it into this machine that spins the alt and diagnoses it... the guy at kragen let me watch it being tested, it's actually pretty cool..

Ok I tested the battery and it was at like 8 volts...I left it charging over night and got it to like 14. It's in the car now and it's turning over and starting fine. It seems to be holding its charg now that the wire is taped up and off the header.
What I think happend was the corroded wire was affecting the charge of the battery somehow. Well see how it holds up.
