Im changing a points style ignition over to HEI. What am i going to use for the ignition power for the coil?

i use an msd box, but wouldnt you use the power wire that turns on with ignition?

i was thinking that but when you crank the engine over you loose that power if i am thinking right.

You can run a wire from the "IGN" accessory plug in spot on your fuse box to the 12 volt feed on the cap on the HEI.

Most parts stores sell a short length of wire with a pre-fabbed clip to attach to the HEI cap. In a pinch a spade terminal will work also.

Mike, doesn't the acc terminal loose power on crank?

I have my HEI hooked up to the 12v ACC slot in my fuse block. I also have problem with my car being ablt to rev over 4500 rpm. Anyways it will work if you hook it up to your ignition switch.

Rick,

The "IGN" approach works fine on my '69 Camaro. My stock points igniton took a dump so I threw it in a box and stabbed in an HEI I had laying around.

Of course, that leaves open the possibility that first and second gen wiring are somehow different in this respect. I doubt it, but perhaps someone knows for sure?

My 73 is the same way (IGN terminal).

No problems here.... http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

i thought that many 70's gm don't have a full 12v at the coil, a special resister wire drops the voltage to 8v or so, this reduces points wear, if your coil has a wire on the schematic off the back of the starter that connects to your coil that's probably the case, the coil gets a full 12v (10v) during starting to compensate for voltage drop. it's been awhile since i actually had a points car though.

well, you can just get rid of the yellow wire that is connected to the pink wire, and use the pink wire (that's what i did and ran around with it like that for a couple of years)... it's supposed to be a resistor wire, but i still got 12v out of it...

***BUT, if you want to do it nice and clean, pull the engine harness connector out of the firewall, remove the pink wire from the connector, and replace it with a 12 gauge wire (with correct crimped GM male connector available at your local autparts shop), then run it right up to the 12v terminal on the dist...tape it up clean.. that's how i ended up doing it in the end and it works perfectly..

IGN keeps power after car is on, so does ACC (that's where I wired radio/a few lights)

Get a test light, it looks like a screwdriver with an alligator clip, and you can see what wires stay alive when

Better look again. I think you mean "BAT" and "ACC".
IGN has power when the ignition is ON. (That is where I wired my electric choke.)
