View Full Version : disappearing pcv valve grommit!?

I have an odd problem with my '81 camaro project car-

It has the 229 Chevy V6, which is basically 3/4 of a 305 SBC...I already have plans to swap engines, however I'm cleaning up the rest of the car first. It's nice to have the V6 running so the car can move under it's own power while I am building a 350 to replace it....

So anyways, here is my problem:

Initially- It starts and runs nicely, However- After about 30mins of driving, it starts to idle terribly...it shakes and blows the PCV valve grommit and fills the whole car with smoke(smells like oil)? When this happens, the car just spits white smoke/exhaust/something from the oil cap and pcv valve...which makes for a cool "james bond style smoke screen" for anyone unlucky enough to be behind this thing.

PCV Valve looks good, line is not clogged, no vacuum leaks...what should I check next? is there any temporary 'band-aid' type fixes for this?

Thanks

Do a compression check. If the PCV is okay, then it sounds like really worn or broken ring(s).

Blowing the PCV out is pressure building up in the crtankcase. So much of it the intake vacuum can't overcome it. (and that's a LOT) You have serious mechanical problems in the cylinder sealing department,, broken rings like smokin said, cracked piston, a head gasket blown between two cylinders will do this, but more likely you'd be seeing water in the oil also if it were gasket. My suggestion is hurry up with the 350 your building,, your gonna need it sooner than you think.
