Is there a carb on the market besides a Quad that would bolt onto a stock GM intake without a spacer plate. I am trying to install my air induction system and my Quad is old and worn out.

You have quite a few choices:

A replacement Q-jet from:
Rebuilt from Summit
A new carb from
Edelbrock (new)
Carter AFB
Demon

or a Holley Spread Bore replacement,

or a Square Bore Holley or Edelbrock Performer / AVS using a Edelbrock adapter plate # 2731.

The adapter plate is less than an 1/8" thick and it's cheap!

I had a Carter on my 73 and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It performed well and I never touched it. My brother in law has a Holley on his truck and he keeps a screwdriver in his glove compartment because he is always tweaking it.

I like my Carter. I started with a 750 cfm and now I am running a 600. Easy to tune and just seems to work without any hassle.

I don't know, I have never had a qjet or a stock manifold http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/smile.gif

I just finished searching ebay for a carter carb and ran across a 625 Carter. The rebuilder states that it is almost identical to an edelbrock carb and is not recommended for high temps under hoods. it will cause it to flood leading to hard starting hot,bad idling and stalling .I have had the flooding problem with every edelbrock I owned including my present one and I have a fuel regulator installed .I guess I will probably take the Quad route.Probably pick one up this winter while my car is in storage and sell off the edelbrock in the spring. If a holley will bolt onto the stock intake without a spacer plate then maybe I will go that route also.

flooding with an edelbrock is pretty common prob, but also a pretty simple fix.

8 out of 10 times re setting the floats will fix the prob, but don't reset them to spec.

set them to 7/16" at rest and 15/16" to 1" drop

If you can find a Carter, they have a slight spreadbore to them and will work.

My Carters have all been square bore. I have a cheap fuel pressure regulator and it keeps it from flooding. I have had problems with percolation and solved that with a 1/2" phenolic spacer. Also be careful of your fuel line routing. I have mine coming up the front of the block and over the top of the manifold. I put some of that heat shield sleeving over the fuel line just to make sure.

Nothing bolts up to the 4-hole GM manifold but another QJet or a Holley 650 CFM Qjet replacement carb. The weird big-n-little arrangement of the throttle bores makes any squarebore carb not line up properly. Even with a spacer it's still kinda weird going from 4 carb bores to an open area and back into 4 oddly-sized manifold openings again. I always thought it looked kinda like running a NASCAR restrictor plate!

For a good performance-built QJet there are several choices (including having me set it up for you). Other than myself one place I trust is The Carb Shop in Ontario, California (not Canada). No website but their phone number is either 909 or 919 area code. Just don't have it in front of me right now.

Since the carb issue seems to lead me back to a Quad then is there another intake on the market that is the same height as the stock intake.

Holley part# 9895. It's a (spread bore) 4175 series with vacuum secondaries and electric choke. It's about 650 cfm and replaces most any quadra-bog. A little over $300 brand new.
