ok after a few weeks of decideing, i took all of your advice and decided im gona start out with a big block, 11's is what i wana shoot for but im very low on money but i want to start out, now im gona go with a 454 in my 79 Camaro with the Th350 trans im going to keep in temp. and my new built GM 10bolt 3.73 Gear and Eaton Posi Unit. Now im going to call around to some junk yards and i wana start out with an engine i can clean up and stuff. what kind of truck had the 454? anything i should look for specificly? anything have the 4 bolt mains? Now the 2nd part of my question, im gona start out with keeping the bottom half stock, i gotta do valvetrain and maybe after winter some nice performance heads, what will a stock 454 run about? horsepower? and what will it take for me to get in the 11's range? Thanks alot!!

You are gonna have a hard time finding a 454 at a junkyard, and you better have the cash ready because when they do come in they sell real quick! My 71 has a rebuilt mild 454, performer rpm cam and intake, 781 heads, 397 dyno rear wheel hp, I have never run it in the quarter, but its a good bit faster than my LT 1 Vette. All full size trucks and most early full size cars could come with the 454. The 4 bolt was in the 1 ton or higher trucks, and HP Chevelles/vettes, don't worry about finding one of them in a junkyard. 454's destroy stock 350 transmissions quick!

The rearend should be ok. Atleast I hope I have justed finished building my 10 bolt to handle my 454. My motor dynod at 496 hp and 508 lb/ft torque. Also dont really worry about finding a four bolt main unless you plan on trying to turn high rpm's. Big block 2 bolt mains work fine for most engines. I have been told if you trully need a 4 bolt main block you need an aftermarket block because the factory blocks wont hold enough power to need a four bolt.
