View Full Version : My bbc swap update & notes
70SSman 05-28-2007, 01:43:34 PM Finally had a little more time to dedicate to the project. First off my engine has been bolted in to the mounts (small block). Bellhousing was attached as well with no issues. Mini starter went in fine, just needed a few shims to get the proper gear depth. Headers are on and have plenty of room, still need to connect the drivers side pipe to the collector. Carb has been connected along with the fuel lines.
Now some issues still pending: Throttle linkage is now to short, will need to be replaced with a longer one. Kick down cable, same issue, too short, needs to be replaced. Power steering bracket will not work, will need some bfh time to even think about getting it to work. Alternator bracket & pullies need to be replaced.
Parts I still need to buy: Radiator, pullies, alt & power steering brackets, electric fan & some odds and ends.
If anybody has any questions about my swap, please let me know:confused:

Urban Samurai 05-28-2007, 04:00:44 PM looks good, did you change the front springs?
If you are looking for alt, ps, and pullies let me know I should be able to dig up my old ones.
70SSman 05-28-2007, 04:57:46 PM I changed the front springs about 6 months ago with the hotchkis... Not sure if i will need to upgrade to bb springs.. As for the brackets & pullies, I might be interested.:p
Jim Mac 05-28-2007, 06:25:58 PM gmpartsdirect still has the power steering brackets for about 40 bucks for the set. I just got a set for spares. I think you can get the alt brackets there too. jim

DCR 1979 Z28 05-29-2007, 11:14:06 AM What headers did you use? They look like they fit pretty well? As far as your brackets and pulleys you might try an RV salvage that's where I got mine I paid like $40 for every thing instead of $100 the auto salvage wanted. The AC bracket are different and the power steering pump is the remote reservoir type, but I going make my own AC brackets using an r4 compressor instead of the a6, should save about 20lbs. The power steering pump I am just going to buy a rebuilt one with tank from the auto parts store about $40.
Twisted_Metal 05-29-2007, 02:10:44 PM I've got a question...
Why do you have a bell housing (manual trans part) and a kick-down cable (auto trans part) in the same car?
What are you going to use for a tranny?
TooLateVTEC 05-29-2007, 02:18:51 PM Lookin good man, keep it up!
For a throttle cable in my car,I got one for a late 70's Chevy pick up w/ an inline 6 cylinder b/c I couldnt get a BB Camaro one from the dealer. Dont remember the PN,but just tellin ya what I run and it works. :bowtie:

You don't call the part of the auto tranny that bolts up to the block a bell housing? I always have. Looking at his photo album he has an auto.
70SSman 05-29-2007, 07:46:39 PM Sorry about the "bellhousing quote" as I am not a certified mechanic nor did I claim to be one. All my cars up until this one have been standards, as for that part, what do you call it?.
My headers are the summit brand for $89.00

Are you happy with them and the way they fit?
70SSman 05-29-2007, 08:09:55 PM They fit great, just wished they were coated.... Did not want to spring for the extra cash...:whine:

I am leaning towards using them as well. After I get the engine broke in enough and I have made any 'adjustments' needed to the headers I am going to take my entire exhasut to a local guy to have everything ceramic coated.
70SSman 07-01-2007, 08:59:30 PM Another update: New headmans are in along with my msd wires & just finished up about 90% of the engine compartment... Still have to hookup the kick down cable & finish welding the exhaust, but no leaks now!:bowtie:
