73454 09-05-2005, 12:46:00 PM I hate to tell you this, but those times aren't too far off what you should be seeing with the things you have listed. You've got a heavy car, and not much motor. The heads are the single biggest limiting factor in your setup.
1977camaro owner 09-05-2005, 01:16:00 PM I Was of the opinion it should go quicker actually if you consider I ran 13.81 @97 MPH last year Then i went to 15:30 This year with no changes done some recurving of the dist ,rebuilt carb went up two jet sizes & put good quality spiral pro wires got me back to 14:51 to 14:61 In 6 Passes
other people on the forum think 13:00s Should be apiece of cake Just my 2 Cents
I dont think they all need BB engines to go quicker Actually seen a 1978 Impala Full Dress 373 Gears 350 Flat tops 2600 Stall
ran 13:78 this weekend That thing had to be 500 Lbs heavier than mine And He told me He had A Comp 270h Cam in it Street tires

rscamaro73 09-05-2005, 01:42:00 PM I bet your timing is ALL off....and the carb needs some work still.
When you get in a bad situation like that you prolly need to spend the $ on a dyno tune...at least for a little bit....
1977camaro owner 09-05-2005, 02:43:00 PM well we removed the old dist bought the crane kit with vac adv which is plugged off due to minor street use put in 1 heavy spring (BLUE)& 1 Medium (SILVER)the timing is 18* initial 37* Allin at 2800 RPM Had Another Chap look intothe Carb Said everything Checked Ok Moved Up From 72 to 74 Jets To give it a sandy color on the electrode I am Wondering If Maybe I should Start Cheching Valve Spring Pressures and camshaft lift THis car on the street Is a Real Tiresmoker and feels good in the seat of the pants Seems to die off after the 1/8

73454 09-05-2005, 03:03:00 PM Have you checked the fuel output? It could be nosing over because you're not getting enough fuel. I had a similar problem where I was actually draining the fuel bowls because the pump couldn't keep up. It did not show itself until on the track.
1977camaro owner 09-05-2005, 04:43:00 PM I have a pressure guage hooked to the regulator which is supplied by a holly blue and i set it back from 6.5 to 5.5 at idle because it seemed to creep higher (LAST YEAR)when I was revving Although like you say it could be dropping off at top end I do have A comp guage 2 5/8 But did 'nt like the look of it on the wiper cowl I cannot find the braided hose either To Re hook it up
SteveF1979Z 09-05-2005, 06:33:00 PM You stated that it is falling off after the 1/8th. If it is like mine I would say carb and timing. I lost a solid 2 seconds on my car, then went back to basics after the guys here told me to stop and think it through. I am not a great tuner, so it was very difficult for me. I ended up making only one change at a time and keeping track of everything on a log book. Found a great setup on the carb and a great timing curve. It suck on the street but rocks on the track. Next goal is to go over everything this fall and early winter then its off to the chasis dyno for me, so I can see the changes easier.

just drive it!!!!
rustbucket79 09-05-2005, 06:36:00 PM What are you using for trans and clutch/converter?
Radials are definately causing the poor 60' times.
Definately hook up a pressure gauge temporarily for some passes to confirm decent fuel pressure at full speed.
Since you have an old set of heads I would do both a compression test (general engine condition) and a cylinder leakdown test. (if/where the cylinders aren't sealing up
How does the car launch in terms of engine operation, smooth acceleration or is there a bog?

1977camaro owner 09-05-2005, 06:43:00 PM No Bog the engine is relatively new 6000 KLM 3000 stall turbo 350 seems to work well on street I know the performer is hurting me but I still Cannot fig7ure out why ut ran 13:81- 13:95 Last season
rustbucket79 09-05-2005, 09:37:00 PM I'd still suggest doing some diagnosis before trying other things. I seriously doubt your intake manifold is choking your engine that much. If you can find one, try out a 650 to 750 Holley double pumper carb and see how it works. (definately try before you buy)

Marv D 09-05-2005, 10:06:00 PM Yes your down 3-4mph and in this heavy of a car that's a notable, although not significant power loss. You really can't look at ET as an indicator of how much power the motor is making (well to an extent anyways). The trap MPH is your best indicator of power gains or losses. ET is just torque and traction. Traction apparently being a HUGE factor here.
Typically you would jet up the secondaries till MPH falls off, then back down 1 or 2 jet sizes. Here where you were seeing aluminum on the plugs,, you have no choice, but to keep going up or face a melt down or a shattered hypereutectic piston.
With a flat top piston, small chamber heads and a tight quench the motor likely isn't going to want a lot of advance. Could be your adding jet to try and overcome an advance curve that is too aggressive. Don't know, but that's a thought.
At sea level I would put the carb back to 1 jet size fatter than factory claibration, bring the timing down to 33° (locked out) and make a pass and see what happens to MPH and a fresh set of plugs. If you have to keep adding jet to color the plugs I would suspect a carb / fuel delivery problem on the top end. The vacuum secondary Holley is pretty good at metering the fuel, but if something is fubar,,, well a borrowed carb and fuel pressure guage would sure answer that quection!
Just a FWIW,, you don't have near enough motor there to warrant a Victor Jr, not unless your managing to spin that thing to 6800-7000 early in the run. What you give up in midrange torque is not going to be worth the high rpm gain IMO
