View Full Version : I need help on headers
Chuck 706 05-25-2007, 12:40:15 PM I've now received my second set of Hooker Super Comp headers for my 76 sb and on both sets the left collector points toward the ground. And on this set the collector also angles toward the outside of the car. Is this common or am I just having bad luck? And would Headmans have better quality?
CorkyE 05-25-2007, 01:40:16 PM The actually should point straight back, I didn't know they are supposed to angle in any direction. As for quality, I'm starting to hear some issues after Holley bought them but I don't know if Hedman would be any better or not. I use the plain Hooker competition and don't have any problems.
Good luck with this.
kenny77 05-25-2007, 05:10:43 PM Headmans have a ball socket type of collector flange with a bolt collar that you can rotate around anyway you want. I likes the ceramic elite headers better than the Hookers because the flanges and the tubes were thicker.
Their type of collector connection is the BOMB because even if your pipes aren't totally inline they bolt up and seal great with no gaskets needed. If you need a pic let me know and I can post one...........I would send those back if your not happy, but that's just me.
Chuck 706 05-25-2007, 07:32:18 PM A picture would be great Kenny. Thanks
I'm going to send these back but I fell bad for Jet Hot. I bought these through them and Hooker has said they'd reimburse Jet Hot but it's sure causing them to go through a lot of trouble.
I'm considering buying the Hedman 65104's and sending them to Jet Hot to have their coating put on. But I have Pypes reducers and they don't show a ball and socket reducer. grumble......
I think I'll just open a cold one.
MoparGuy 05-25-2007, 07:44:14 PM My Hooker Super Comps aim straight back and don't hit the floor pan on my 81 350 Z

I just put Headman's in my car and I'll never go back to Hooker. I didn't go Elite because I don't like the shiny coatings. My fit was awesome. And like posted above the flanges will rotate around anywhere you want them.

Same here... but my super-comps are over 10yrs old...
blown1981z28 05-25-2007, 09:15:24 PM I also went with hedmans no complaints. The ball socket collector is awesome. No more collector gaskets to blow out.
Ztoy 05-26-2007, 09:37:24 AM Looks to me like you got the wrong style of headers. Check your part numbers....my supercomps are great and shoot straight back not down.

These are Hooker#2117. Jegs, Summit, Hooker and Jet Hot all show this to be the correct number. But regardless of the number I can't believe any company would release a header for sale that has the collector so obviously miss-welded. Right now I'm just very p.o.'d. I have over $1300 worth of headers in my shop that I can't use unless I cut them apart and re-weld and re-coat them.
Ztoy 05-26-2007, 03:28:09 PM Chuck I just checked the number of my Super Comps and they are 2117's too. Mine are straight and do not touch the floorboard either. Where did you order them from? Makes you wonder where they make these headers at and whats happened to their quality control. I got mine last year about this time but I got mine through Jet Hot. No matter, its a Holley problem. Hopefully your supplier has your back and makes it right, and right now. Comparing my Hookers to my old Hedmans is like night and day difference, but when you get fu'd crap like that, no matter how good the header is, its still no good. Sometimes it depends on who you talk to and how you toalk to them. I bend the shaft on an aluminum waterpump, a Tuff something or other. It was because I threw a fan blade at about 5k rpm. I called them direct, talked decent to them and they replaced it. Another time I lost a lobe on a compcam with over 4k miles on the motor and cam. I called and talked to someone, was decent and totally honest, and they ended up replacing the cam and lifters for nothing other than the shipping for me to send them my old cam and lifters. Sometimes it works. Hope things work out for you as well.
Chuck 706 05-26-2007, 07:17:27 PM I agree that you can get a lot more accomplished by treating the people you deal with nice. I've now had two conversations with Hooker customer service and although very difficult I have managed to keep my cool both times. Even when the first guy told me that if I had after market heads I should buy someone else's headers. Really.
I'm getting the impression that their employees are not happy people.
I also bought mine through Jet Hot and Todd and Matt have both been very helpful but I also feel sorry for Jet Hot as they are caught in the middle on all of this. By allowing me to return these headers even if Hooker reimburses them they are still out the expense of their coating on both sets of headers and all of the shipping.
kenny77 05-26-2007, 11:09:30 PM HEY Chuck........
Here's the ball-in socket collector connection. I got to tell you, I had BOTH the Headman Elite Ceramic and Hooker Super Comps in front of me at the speed shop and liked the headmans better.
The ball socket reducer comes with the headers so you just weld / clamp that part to your pipes, so no worry or problems there. My pipes are 2 1/4 and after the mufflers the tailpipes are 2 1/2
No making fun of my crappy mig exhaust welding job now buddy...

I'm holding back... ;)
Ztoy 05-27-2007, 08:14:22 AM Dang Chuck, I can certainly see your point. I guess I was lucky since I got mine not so long ago. But you sure can't let the car sit just because Hooker is being an azz about it. I wonder if you went up the ladder and talked to someone's bosses boss if it would make a difference. Not sure you would want to go through that kind of hassle, but sometimes lower level employees are pulling crap that the bigwigs aren't aware of, and you know those in charge can't fix a problem they don't know exists. And who knows, maybe they'll make it right for all your hassles....

Thanks for the photos Kenny. They really help. I'm pretty sure I'm going back with Headman.
As to that weld job. As someone that done a lot of welding I wasn't exactly proud of I'm sure not going to pick on someone's welding that did the job themselves. Sort of like a bad paint job that some one did them selves. I remember my first one. (shudder) Not pretty but by golly I did it myself.
Thanks again Kenny, these photos do help.

I sent Matt with Jet Hot some photos of both sets after talking to him and he was going to forward them to Hooker. As they buy a heck of a lot of headers from Hooker I thought he might have a better shot at getting some positive results.
I'm considering ordering a set of Hedman's from Jet Hot but I'm kind of gun shy now. Matt said they'd be glad to sell me a set but I wouldn't be able to return them. And I can understand that as when they refund my money on these they will have been out a lot of money. I may but from Jegs or Summit and check them on the car first then ship them to Jet Hot. More delays.
Boy this hobby gets discouraging at times don't it?
rustover 05-28-2007, 06:22:10 PM I have a set of headman 65104, that I purchased from Matt at Jet hot. I got them a few weeks ago. I checked them by bolting them together like in your pic. They were no way near what your pic looked liked. One side may have been angle up about 1/8 of an inch more than the other. My only problem with them is they have some white areas in the coating. Matt said they didn't leave them in the polishing tank long enough. I took some polish and worked into some spots and the white does come off, and they polish up very nice. Best of luck, Russ

I ordered the same ones from jet hot and put the flanges together and the headers are perfect, same height and everything,I am very impressed with them.love the ball and socket collectors,no more collector gasket blow outs.
Ztoy 05-29-2007, 11:52:31 AM So let us know how it goes with Hooker via Jethot. Also which way you end up going....and mucho luck there too!

I talked to Matt again today and Fedex is picking up both sets of Hookers tomorrow and I've already ordered the Hedmans from Jegs. As soon as I receive them I'll make sure they fit like they should then I'm sending them to Jet-Hot for the coating.
Both Matt and Todd have been great on all of this. Good people to do business with.
tomsti 05-30-2007, 10:15:29 AM So does Jet Hot take the Hooker headers and coat them? Or do they sell the finished product the way they get it from Hooker already coated?
Sounds like a good company. I like giving money to good companies :)

Yes, Jet Hot buys the headers from the header companies and coats them.
On this last set I'm buying from Jegs just so I can try them on the car before I send them to Jet Hot.

Why buy the bare headers then send them to jet-hot when you can get the elite headers already jet-hot coated?

Yeah that's my big question too!!! I mean everyone on here is stroking Jet-Hot big time like what they do is that much better than the Elite ceramic coat?? Is it ??? Mine are 3 years old and look great.
I know the Elite Headers are thicker than their standard headers and that was a big deal for me.
So is it just to say that I had them Jet Hot coated OR WHAT? I'm trying to understand the logic behind buying a cheaper set of headers and then having them coated and paying MORE to another company that has nothing to do with the basic workmanship of the product. I think we've proven that....all the nicey nicey guy stuff aside now.
I think when it comes to finishes and coatings, I try to never polish a turd.
The standard headman headers are cheaper made then the Elite headers so why send them out for some ultra trick, wham bam, super slick ,gee whiz coating on them in the first place? You wind up spending MORE money on a lesser quality piece. I mean think about it.....why? That to me makes no sense at all.>>>>>>>>>>>Ken

Sorry you got poor quality stuff you could try the floor jack & wood block to try and bend them when installed although they should fit correctly with what they charge for them, I used Hooker's and they fit right the first time.

After the luck I've already had I want to install the headers and make sure they fit right and then I'll send them to be coated. Jet Hot told me a five day turn around and that's not bad considering all of the time I've already spent on just my headers.

I've seen the Sterling finish from Jet Hot and that's what i want plus I've seen the Hedmans that I have ordered and they're what I want. So that's why I'm going this way.
To each their own and all of that.
Dirt Reynolds 05-31-2007, 11:56:52 PM I'm another guy very happy with the fit and finish of Hedman hedders. Mine are 1 3/4" with the ceramic coated finish. They tuck up great under the floorboard and even with my car being lowered there is adequate ground clearance. Like has been posted above, their quality and attention to detail with features like thicker flanges is a big plus.
KansasTwister 06-01-2007, 12:14:48 AM My dad dragraced back in the ahra, and for years all he ever used was hooker super comps, not because he didnt try everyone else, he worked at a drag shop and probally tested about every new product that had came out, and used what he liked. He still preaches that hooker supercomps are the ONLY header to use, but he hasnt raced anything since the 80s. I personaly prefer hookers becasue my dad raced with them, and had a world record bigblock car with them. Im thinking you got a bad batch or a wrong part number.
Ztoy 06-01-2007, 11:35:09 AM I sure love my shiney, almost chrome like ceramic coating from Jet Hot, plus its lifetime warranty. I started and broke my motor in with other headers, then afterwards put the Hookers on, and so far the finish has remained just the way they were when I got them. I talked to all of the header companies and they all said their coating was best (surprised?) but I found nothing but good revues concerning Jet Hot. So far so good.....
camaro75LT 06-01-2007, 03:04:33 PM I put my hedman headers in yesterday on my back with a lousy jack, had no problems with the installation and they are a beautiful fit.
Chuck 706 06-01-2007, 03:34:53 PM An update on the header saga.
I received a call from Hooker today (Jet Hot had called them) and they apologized for what they said was a quality control issue that went on for a couple of months. So here's the plan. Hooker is going to pull a set of their # 2117 painted headers and bolt them together to double check collector alignment and then drop ship them to me. The order goes through Jegs. I'll try them on the car and if they are as they should be then I'm to send them on to Jet Hot for their coating.
Man what a soap opera.....
camaro75LT 06-01-2007, 04:17:33 PM At least their making the situation right, keep us updated.

Just an FYI Jet Hot is the ones that coat the Elite headers. I see that hooker is going to make it right for you and thats great! Alot of people dont realise the headman elite headers are already jet hot coated.
Ztoy 06-02-2007, 09:45:10 AM Great news Chuck, way to hang in there...Prostreet, unless things are different this year, I talked to Hedman before I bought my Hookers last year and they told me their process was different than Jet Hot's, and done somewhere altogether different. But maybe they're like refrigerators, only one or two manufacturers with several labels attached later...
seventy7camaro 06-03-2007, 12:32:03 PM I just got my Hooker Super Comp 2117 headers this past Thursday. I'd gotten them thru Jet-Hot with the Grey coating. Up till the last few minutes, the box had only been opened far enough to verify that the gray was on the headers as ordered. After reading the posts in this thread I almost ran to the box and removed the headers for inspection. Thankfully, mine appear to be OK on all accounts. It'll be some time before they're installed but from what I can see here, I'm happy. By the way... I had mine done in gray because I'm going for "as close to the factory stock look" as I can get.
Ztoy 06-04-2007, 08:02:29 AM Cool, so maybe they've corrected their quality control issues.....lets hope anyway.
