So I was putting my accessories onto my big block and it came to my attention that the crank pulley did not line up with the water pump pulley. When I bought my big block it was all disassembled but it came with the water pump pully and the crank pulley. One thing I noticed was that the diameter of the water pump pulley was too large and it physically hit the crank pulley, that was no big deal, i just used the WP pulley from my sb. and the WP pulley does line up with the alternator pulley.
The problem is that my crank pulley does not line up with my wp pulley, its about 1/4 not far out enough. The crank pulley has three grooves. So it appears my crank pulley is about 2.75 inches deep and i would need a crank pulley 3.00 inches deep(from rough measurements).............are there different crank pulleys? or was i give the wrong crank pulley when i bought the motor?
thanks guys

Sounds like you go some mixed up pulleys. As you saw from my previous post I lost my crank pulley last year. I ended up buying a new crank and water pump pulley from March perf (Ouch$$$)

yea, i was happy just using a stock one, but thats not looking like its goign to happen...........so if i do order one, are they all a standard depth, or do i need to take measurements of everything so i can make sure they all align correctly? any recommendations for where to order a crank pulley, water pump pulley set?

I had the same problem, order chrome pulleys for my 62 and nothing line up so I got the stock ones chrome plated along with the fan shroud.

nice, so i can order them and have them not align correctly, or use the stock ones(that were given wtih the engine) and have them not align correctly. i love being in a pickle. i at least have a couple weeks or a month to figure it out though before the car is ready to fire up, so thats good.

havent even had time to attempt yet. schools been going like crazy, but im finally done on friday. so im hoping to put in some time on them in the evenings starting next week. if not then im gonna have to wait until im back from my honeymoon. once i get the headers fitted, and figure out this pulley, i should be in the clear, hopefully.

would this set up work for me? I do have a long water pump. I know the water pump pulley has 2 grooves and i only need one, but i only need 2/3 of the crank pulley too anyways.

The only thing pretty much you need to know is if it's a short or long water pump. I got my pulleys from March, but mt previous water pump pulley was just a cheap chrome one from summit. I think you can just get them from the GM counter. They want big $$ from the after market places like Year One.

of course there was a stock gm one on ebay going for cheap and i dozed off while studying and when i awoke the auction was over, and it stayed cheap too! at least im not in a hurry.

three groove pulley is for a/c car. the water pump pulley you have is for a non a/c car. non a/c runs a larger pulley than a/c car so it will hit the three goove pulley. smaller pulley does more rpms so it it circulates faster for a/c car. wp pulley number 330556 is the larger one and 3995631 is the smaller one. if you don't have a/c you need to find a 2 groove pulley or a smller wp pulley if you have a/c.
