and if it would cost much more, whats a Good intake to match with it to get even more hp?
FreedomPenguin 05-21-2007, 11:01:07 PM bump. and lifters to..
night rider 05-21-2007, 11:19:19 PM With low compression, high cc heads I would go with the summit house brand # SUM-K1102. Duration 262/ 272, Lift .420/ .442, $63 for cam and lifters
If you got your compression up to 9:1 to 10:1 then I would say the SUM-K1103 ....Duration 272/ 282, Lift .442/ .465,
FreedomPenguin 05-21-2007, 11:26:19 PM cam cheapest way for engine power first off? i have headers, should i get something Before a cam.?
if not would that cam give my engine anymore hp?
night rider 05-21-2007, 11:52:31 PM Well in terms of what gives power IMO, here's the list in order
Heads
compression
cam
The cam and compression has to match closly. Install a bigger cam in a low compression engine and it becomes a dog at rpm/speeds under 3500 rpm/70 mph
But put a small cam in a high compression engine and you end up with an engine that pings like crazy..
76cc heads are kill your compression.. Go to 64cc or so and it will bump your compression up a good bit .
Also head flow.. Most smogger heads don't flow too well.
Truthfully if it was me, I would hold off on buying a cam..
Save up some more cash and go vortec heads.
Used vortec heads with stock rocker arms for $75-150
Pro products vortec intake for $130
z28 valve springs for $25-35
grind the bottom of retainers.
Then the summit K1103 cam kit $63
Now you will have a much better combo
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 12:10:28 AM vortecs to exspensive the heads new?
what specs am i lookin at for heads.. the name of it.
night rider 05-22-2007, 01:13:55 AM You can get GM vortec heads used on ebay for $75 to 150 bucks for the pair
Junkyards has them for $150-250 a pair
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 01:15:13 AM ty.. im gettin me some get paycheck friday
night rider 05-22-2007, 03:01:33 AM Your welcome.. Vortec heads are killer on the street. They flow great, plus around 64 cc chambers so your compression will go up. Then add in the K1103 cam kit, a good intake, headers, dual exhaust, good mufflers, 600 cfm carb and you will have you a fast street engine
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 02:34:39 PM thx how do i kno there vortecs when i find em tho? and im lookin for 2.02 righ
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 02:43:22 PM with night rider said, wit hmy 79 2 bolt. wit new heads n that cam, what hp will i get? stock its like 165hp.. its pathetic. i dunno tho theres another code thats same that says 250hp and my engine does nothing to but peel tires with no hesitation but i want more. how much horse do would these items offer each?
TooLateVTEC 05-22-2007, 02:43:49 PM Vortec heads have only 8 intake bolts,4 on each side...2 at the front and back and they go STRAIGHT UP,not an angle like whats in the heads you have right now.
Then go w/ a cam just under .480 lift so it will clear (retainer to valve guide),get an intake and your good to go.
Vortec heads are a good bolt-on 40-ish HP. A cam will net anywhere from 20-70 depending on size.
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 02:46:16 PM so I cant use vortec heads??
night rider 05-22-2007, 07:06:23 PM Yes you can use vortec heads.. You just have to buy a vortec style intake to match the bolt patter on the vortec heads.
Vortecs has 1.94"/1.50" valves.. Under the valve cover, casted into the heads will be a long set of numbers.. That is the casting #'s on the heads.. Your looking for heads with the last 3 digits of "062" or "906"
Vortecs was used on 1996 to 2000 L-31 350 engines in the full size 1/2 ton trucks and vans.
Vortec heads are worth 30-60 HP gain over your heads.
Your compression will go from low 8's to low 9's and thats worth about 8 HP on this combo
Then the K1103 cam kit will be worth about 40 HP to this engine
Then the Pro products crosswind vortec style intake (knock off of the edelbrock RPM air gap) will be worth about 12 hp min
That puts you at about 257 HP if the engine was 165 HP to start with
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 10:42:37 PM cost you think total 400-500? thats not bad at all.
night rider 05-23-2007, 01:16:57 AM Yeah your looking at probbly about $450-550 for all the parts, and gaskets
