Hard to believe they got past QC like that. I'd call Comp and tell them.

Its funny becuase so many guys here swear by Comp yet so many guys here have wiped out cam lobes on Comp solid lifter cams. I hope they aren't riding on past glory like Mercedes Benz. Even Mercedes Benz has admitted their quality has dropped badly in the last ten years and todays cars are not the incredible product the ones in the 60-90s were.
Its hard work staying on top and Comp shouldn't slack off just becuase they are so popular. You never know they may well have. Just to be safe I went ISKY but the local parts shops "poo-poo" any suggestion Comp isn't a good choice. Their Comp Cam sales could be driven by margins and inventory more than actual parts reliabilty though. They also admit they don't sell many Comp solid lifter cams.

Comp Cam quality has always been questionable. I bought some of their half-a**ed roller tip rockers when they first came out. A couple had knots on the "coined" pushrod tip area and tore them up. The guy at the speed shop found some others like this. He also mentioned the Pro Magnums seemed to have a lot of side slop to them. Probably true, I've read on forums about computer controlled engines that they are noisy- causing the knock sensor to activate. Also, whenever I've checked their cam journal runout, they are usually way out. I talked to their tent reps at a couple events & they gave me the "well they were straight when they left the factory line". Well, considering they charge double for their cams ,maybe they could afford to put a couple of sticks in the box to make sure they stay that way.

Where are you guys buying this stuff? Maybe that has something to do with it because at the machine shop where I work we use alot of comp products in engines that turn 8000+ rpm and make 650+ horsepower in dirt track stock cars and I have never seen a problem related to product quality with comps parts.
Also Wiping out cam lobes is generally a break in issue or valve adjustment issue and hardly ever a cam issue.
Just my educated oppinion though.

I agree with Grey, I've used a lot of their stuff that I get through my buddies machine shop on his reccomendation and have had only one problem, hyd. roller cams which I don't thing anyone makes one that will last a long time in a street/race car that spins high.

Yeah I was kind of in debate on what to use in my 355 Im building I was thinking hyd roller but we use alot of solid rollers on stock car engines and they have been very reliable so I think I am going to use the solid roller not to mention it has a wider power band with the same duration and lobe seperation and more lift than the hyd unit.
I can't comment on there hyd roller as I don't think we've used one in an engine since I've been working there and all the race stuff gets solid cams. solid cams are a little more maintnance but I belive it will be reliable in a street car.

Comp is pretty big as sales numbers go, correct? I saw lots of engines when I was an engine machinst in the 70-80s. If you knew nothing about car engines you may have quickly come to the erroneous conclusion that the 305/350 chev engines must have been a terrible design. There were always so many in the shop.
Of course we all knew that every 2nd engine on the road was a small block so it was just a reflection of the numbers produced. I remember thinking what junk Honda Civic 4 bangers must have been becuase we saw so many but of course the same large numbers of cars were appearing. I never used a Comp cam. In that period it was go Crane or go home. Things change. Maybe Comp is suffering the same numbers / image problem. There are as I noted before tons of guys who love them and have done great with them.
Also remember thousands of people were gonna go see Mars tonight ( I knew better! ) and that was just a rehash of old inernet stuff badly distorted. The internet may also be capable of magnifying Comps bad news even if there isn't really much. The old saying is make 1 person happy he'll tell 1-2 others. Piss 1 guy off and he'll tell everyone. I just always hear Comp mentioned and some reputable people swearing they did the break in right. Numbers game or the internet?
