I want to remove the charcoal cannister, will it harm anything? I want to clean up the engine compartment. What about the line that goes to the cannister, can I remove it as well?

What about the line that goes to the cannister, can I remove it as well? 79rallysport 05-21-2007, 02:31:01 PM I've removed my charcoal canister. Just remove the can and leave the line. I've had mine this way for years and never had a problem. EricsZ28 05-21-2007, 02:50:04 PM That line goes directly into the top of your gas tank. It is designed to be a closed system (allowing the carb to suck in and burn any residual fumes). Thus, when you remove the charcoal canister, you need to either plug the line & put a vented cap on, or you need to put a filtered breather on the line. If you don't, dust and dirt can potentially get into the vent line over time and ultimately end up in your tank... cmonson 05-21-2007, 02:59:58 PM Also, make sure you have a vented gas cap... 71 Camaro 05-21-2007, 03:38:41 PM I agree they're ugly things, but they serve a purpose. They keep your car from smelling like gas. I hate the smell of gasoline in my garage. Always gets me worried. Since it is just rubber lines, maybe you could reroute them and hide canister where it is less noticeable or get a smaller one even. Just a thought. cmonson 05-21-2007, 04:48:32 PM I really don't think they look that bad. I actually took mine out with the intentionof getting rid of it. I replaced the hoses that go to the metal lines, scrubbed down the canister to a like new finish, and then brought the hoses up to the canister wrapped in zip ties. It follows along the wiring for the headlights and you can hardly notice the hoses are there. THe canister looks fine as long as it is cleaned up. If you replace the hoses and install them in a neatly fasion, I think it looks fine for 99.9% of us out there... |
