View Full Version : Rod/main bearing choices???

I've always just used the regular Clevite/Michigan 77 or Speed Pro bearings in all my engines, but I was looking at all the choices out there now and its a little confusing.

We got tri metal,copper-lead alloy,TM-77,silicon aluminum,bi metal aluminum alloy-heck, I dont even know what half that crap is!

Does it really make a difference, as long as your clearances are right? I'm putting my engine back together & feel like I'm scrimping to use a "stock" type bearing if theres something else out there that will make it "better" in some way. I guesstimate my engine is around 450lbs/tq and it does see 6800-7000rpm occasionally at the track, also some small amounts of spray. I've had zero problems with stock bearings so far, so is it even worth trying something different (if it aint broke....)??

Thanks!

They only variation we "vary" from "stock" is using coated bearings when available. We feel they provide that little bit of extra protection when you really need it.

If you want to best get these

They are dry-film luberacant coated Clevite 77's

There is one more practical difference that my machinist clued me in to.

The Clevite 77 "Race" bearings have a larger chamfer intended to clear the large radii crank journals of high performance crankshafts. This can be cut into the bearing on a lathe (ala Smokey Yunick's book) but buying them already relieved may be cheaper than having a machinist do it for you (if you need it). He (my machinist)recommended them for my new Scat crankshaft.
