u guys know quality parts.
i got a stock 79 2 bolt 350. suggestions?
and in bold letters at botton it says
YOU CAN UPGRADE TO SPEEDPRO FORGED PISTONS
so whats good. and what work do i gotta do to my engine to make it haul and work with it, i got a new cam coming tomarow dunno what it is yet, my step dad got it and a new intake a victor junior. so hopefully that will give it some more ass. but would this kit make any hp ? what other kit would u reconmend less than 1000..
wookie 05-20-2007, 09:19:55 PM My opinion, deal with Summit or Jegs or some other mainstream dealer when dealing with hard parts like cranks, in case you need to return a part. Some ebay stores are here today....Gone tomorrow...
sniggle_t 05-20-2007, 10:09:48 PM Well, for starters, the Melling M55hv pump has been redesigned and is not suitable for performance engines any longer. You would want the Melling sellect pump instead. Big post about it on here somewhere.
The rest of the parts look ok but are designed for claimer motors. Cheap parts for short term engines. His statement about 400 hp is only gonna happen if you have the right heads.
My opinion, if you are looking for a down and dirty rebuild without machine work and are prepared to replace the engine in a short time, go for it. Otherwise I'd go with some better parts.
Lowend 05-20-2007, 10:47:40 PM That kit seems too cheap... I've heard some scuttlebutt about people selling Scat's factory 2nd cranks on ebay for cheap.
I don't trust it.
In general I would reccomend going though a local machine shop for this stuff; there is no real profit margin on engine internals and if there is a problem you are dealing with the same guy for parts/machine work.
You can order a rotating assy from Scat (or a dealer) including crank, rods, pistons and rings for ~$1300.
64Boxcar 05-20-2007, 11:13:37 PM One thing I would check is if it a Balanced kit. I know it says the crank is a external balance but ALOT of the time its just refering to the type of Balancing it requires. I done ALOT of shoping not to long back for a Scat Kit and I saw this alot. I dont know that I have EVER seen a Balanced kit this cheap. Atleast I didnt know it when I saw it. I bought my kit from Ameduri Racing Products they were deffenitly one of the cheapest for what I wanted. They did A$$ up and lost my order the first time but then When I reorderd the eat most all the shiping. I bought a Scat Kit Balanced by Scat 6inch rods forged flat top SRP's ,File to fit rings ,77 bearings, and Bushed Rods with 2 sets of spiro locks 9000 Series Crank. My cost with them covering most the shiping was $1049. This was the cheapest I could find THIS kit anywere. Not cheaper than 1000 but close and with some nice pieces.
FreedomPenguin 05-20-2007, 11:54:01 PM how much is all the machine work that i need done?
blown1981z28 05-20-2007, 11:56:36 PM Balancing is key. I delt with Dirt Track Thunder when I bought my kit. THey do in house balancing.
Smokin70SS 05-21-2007, 07:19:23 AM Nothing wrong with those pistons if it's a mild motor. I would upgrade to speed pro power forged but I wouldn't trust that crank. Like Lowend said most of those EBay cranks are factory 2nd's.
A stroker motor involves some work. Mostly in mockup. I recommend talking to your machinist about it and prices. In a nutshell you'll need to first have the block machined and have all your rotating assembly parts tolerances checked. If your using your stock rods have them magged, checked for straightness, resized and install new bolts. Then you will need to mockup with cam and timing set and clearance the rods and block for the extra stroke. You'll also need to check bearing clearances and piston to wall clearances. Once everything is corrected the piston and rod assembly must be weight matched and the crank balanced (with flywheel and damper if external). Re assemble while still making sure clearances are right and enjoy the lowend torque.
slimlynn1 05-21-2007, 08:58:43 AM That kit does not include the rods, therefore you will have to have it sent out for ballancing. I would get a complete rotating assembly.
shawntmartin 05-21-2007, 01:25:11 PM Speed-O-Motive is a popular supplier and has ads in just about every car magazine. Here is a kit that is reasonable. The only forged parts are the pistons, but I just wonder if you HAVE to have everything forged even if you are not using any power adders. The whole forged kit is $1600 but this one is cheaper.

add $29 bucks for flattop higher compression pistons and $150 for balancing. What do you guys think?
slimlynn1 05-21-2007, 01:39:14 PM Try these! http://www.ohiocrank.com/chevy_rotating.html

Lowend 05-21-2007, 03:42:28 PM Dude - seriourly stay away from Speed o Motive... they have earned one of the worst reputations in the business.
I've never met anyone who has had a good experience with them
slimlynn1 05-21-2007, 08:27:31 PM You could also run this one for a few less bucks. I don't know what your plans are ror this motor.

shawntmartin 05-21-2007, 09:18:03 PM No racing at the strip, just a real high performance street vehicle with no power adders. Do you think that kit would be a good choice for this purpose, or go with a stronger one? I live in Ohio so buying from OhioCrank would work out well. I do like the forged kit you showed me in the last post. ($1295) I just need to know if thats overkill for my purpose. I just cruise around to the local car shows but find myself getting harassed by imports and Mustangs while driving to and from the shows...so I'm looking for more power.
Oh, good to know about Speed-o-motive. I had no idea.
slimlynn1 05-22-2007, 08:46:13 AM That is exactly the one I have in my engine except with 5.7 rods, a bit of an overkill but if I want to spray it in the future I am all set.
FreedomPenguin 05-22-2007, 02:48:52 PM i just want a toy car for the street with more ass.. im gonna go with heads and cam etc first b4 i spend a grand.
