Is anyone running a drop base air cleaner with a Holley street avenger with electric choke? If so what brand is it? I need about 1 inch of clearance so I don't have to cut a hole in my hood. It's a 81 Z28. I've done a search but didn't see anything with a street avenger.

I just installed a Street Avenger on my 79. I have a Moroso drop base (1 1/4 in?) drop base filter assembly with a K&N xstream filter top. This is on top of the Holley high rise manifold. I've got the hole cut in my hood and it barely clears the bottom the stock hood scoop. Depends on what manifold you run as to weather you have clearance problems.

I have a filter that I'm borrowing from my buddies 68Z/28 convert. THat thing has a huge drop base, somewhere around 2" I cannot find any aftermarket filters with that big of a drop base.

Oh, it's a 327 350hp air cleaner for a 68 Z/28. Next time I pop the hood I'll measure the drop base. But I know for a fact that both summit and jegs do not offer anywhere in the catalogs as big of a drop base. Cuz I've been looking so I can give the cleaner back to my buddy.

Having "free space" above the carb is almost as important as having a big enough filter to begin with. I try for a bare minimum of 1" above the choke horn (if so equipped). Any less and the air doesn't have a chance to straighten out and flow down the venturis in an orderly manner. Not only is it restrictive, it can do weird stuff to the fuel metering that simply can't be tuned out. Had a QJet that would bog and stumble every time with too low a lid- but take the lid off and it would hit like a ton of bricks perfectly every time. An extra 1/4" of room between the carb and air filter lid (from 3/4" to 1") fixed the problem completely. I had to play major games with different filters, bases and stacked up air filter gaskets to buy me that 1/4" but it was worth the effort.
I'm not a big fan of the XStream lids. It would seem reasonable to get extra flow though the lid instead of just around the circumference BUT those pleats in the lid stick down inside an extra 3/4" vs. a stamped metal lid. In a tight hood clearance situation that can hurt as much as it helps (I tried it on the same carb, above, and it performed worse than a stamped metal lid purely becuase I was choking off airflow by restricting space above the carb's throat).
For what it's worth.

I think I am going to just cut a hole in the hood and see if a standard 14" x 3" will work under the scoop.

I just installed a 670 street avenger on my 79. I have a '70 or '71 LT1 intake. I am using a Billet Specialties 14" round air cleaner with a 3" filter. It comes with a 1" drop base. When I used the base that came with it, one of the bolts from the hood scoop hit. I switched to a 1 1/4" base and everything was OK. I did cut of the extra bolt length to for some additional room.
