I just failed emisions twice, first time hc was in the 950 range, installed new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, set carb. I dont know but I thought I had the wrong timing chain cover on the motor so I couldnt set the timing with a light, anyway the 2nd test went down to 404 pass is a 350 I changed back to the carb that was on it before and it still seemed to run rich. got out the timing light and it was at about 20+ BTC mark was about a inch past the last point, will that cause the HC to go up? thanks Jim

I went and used the search button< I think I anszered my own question, too much timing = high emmissions, Jim

Yup, set your timing around 8 btdc, and if that doesn't do it then jet the carb down.

and lean out the Air/fuel mixture for the idle test.

Retard the timing too much and you will see an increase in emissions, the timing has to fall into middle, too much or too little timing will both cause an increase in emissions. On stock or near stock engines running the timing below 10 BTC will usually net the best emissions readings but if you have a large cam retarding the timing that low can make things worse. Your best bet is to have the engine dialed in on a gas anilyzer to get the lowest readings possible.

took it to emissions monday and it passed, I figured I had to pay because it was the 3rd trip anyway so I just tried it and it passed, if it failed I would have taken it to a shop. motor is pretty stock just a performer cam and intake, w headers, set it at 8 BTDC passed with flying colors, also the guy only hooked the sniffer to one pipe, on a dual exhaust. I kinda laughed at that, but didn't say a thing,
