View Full Version : Urgent question, oil in the pcv deal on carb.
Levi 05-18-2007, 03:19:49 PM Alright guys, I replaced the valve covers yesterday...jesus christ I had to take almsot everything off the passengers side just to put them back on. So I take the orb of power off, the vaccum lines from the vaccum fitting for the trannsmission module and vaccumadvance and the pcv vavle deal. I notice when I set the hose down from the transmission module, tranny fluid was just pouring out of it. Like damn. Then I noticed the pcv valve port on the carb has oil sitting in the lip of it. Is this crap normal?
camaro75LT 05-18-2007, 05:32:34 PM you need a new tranny module. a little oil in the pcv valve is okey, a lot can mean to much pressure in the crank from a number of things, or there's no baffle under the valve cover.
Levi 05-18-2007, 06:45:16 PM ....how hard are the tranny modules to replace?

Jacking-up the car is the hardest part... you want a "vacum modulator valve". No big deal... have fun!;)
camaro75LT 05-18-2007, 08:11:08 PM whoops, my bad...not thinking so clearly ;)
TheFly 05-18-2007, 08:21:23 PM Its real easy to change as long as the bolt isn't siezed in the trans.
Mine just snapped off when changing it.
Had to get a 90* drill adapter to drill a hole through the tab for it.
I then use a nut n bolt to reattach.
just bought on yesterday for my car, cost $12 at advanced auto/parts america
Its the red strip adjustable one
TheFly 05-18-2007, 08:24:24 PM Also I dulled a bunch of bits, had better luck with my step drill bits. They are cut different n don't dull easy like normal bits.
Damon 05-18-2007, 08:46:42 PM You might be surprised how well your tranny shifts at part throttle once you get that vacuum modulator replaced. You might as well get an adjustable one while you're at it instead of the stock non-adjustable one. The adjustment range is not all that large, but it's something to play with if your part throttle shift points seem too high or too low for your liking.
Levi 05-18-2007, 10:38:32 PM Hmm the fly got me almost pissn my pants here...i dont want to break the bolt in there...but Ill be sure to pick one up and if anyone can provide me with some pictures of the thing I will be happy :D
TheFly 05-18-2007, 11:00:13 PM What motor you got? Maybe different, dunno but I got a BOP TH350
It was no big deal with the 90* drill attachment
Levi 05-18-2007, 11:29:48 PM TH350 with the infamous 350 motor. Goes Vroom.
Marks71BB 05-18-2007, 11:32:51 PM The trani modulator is not as difficult to replace as the narp valve. lets hope its not that.

Oh no! Not that one... real pain in the hiney.
Marks71BB 05-18-2007, 11:37:55 PM Yeah Mike, if it went bad he may as well just go ahead and replace the trani.
Levi 05-19-2007, 12:19:03 AM ...dunno if i should i believe you.......ll....
Marks71BB 05-19-2007, 12:31:26 AM Levi,
if its a titanium narp valve you should be ok. its likely the modulator.
Levi 05-19-2007, 12:44:31 AM Post pics of this valve if you got em. I cant find the valve anywhere in auto zones sight or summit. Wtf is wrong with me?
Little Naples 05-19-2007, 01:18:51 AM Stock module is the big one on the left.

TheFly 05-19-2007, 01:21:57 AM Dont need summit, all they sell are red strip adjustable ones even at local auto parts store. [black strip is stock, red is adjustable but all anyone has is red] You can get them on Ebay too. They are the same for all TH350s n Th400 up till the 80s
If you have advanced auto or parts america near you the part number is
MD-48
Was $12.23 with tax
Also note that once removed tranny fluid is gonna come rushin out.
And with my broken off bolt that was fun. Ended up cutting the part that goes into trans off, so I could plug the hole n still get access to drill out broken bolt.
If you want a pic still gimma a few while my battries charge.
Gonna doc my carb with pics n stuff as I yank it apart.
TheFly 05-19-2007, 01:31:54 AM Oops Ill still get ya a pic, when I cut the end part off of the old mod to plug the hole so fluid stopped coming out, I also jammed the tip off a tube of calk in it to seal.
But the mod itself will push in and stay n hold in fluid on it own almost fine.
When I first broke it, I had to rig a bunjee cord to hold it on to get my 90* drill adapter. worked fine for a temp hold. Thing kinda wants to stay in there.
Levi 05-19-2007, 01:45:59 AM Lol sounds like your having too much fun man. I cant wait for the pics!
Loki80RS 05-19-2007, 01:57:23 AM only pic of my tranny i have kind of hard to see it, but its the shinny thing

TheFly 05-19-2007, 02:11:43 AM You can see the newer updated version is much smaller n the red strip.
Also made in USA
And you can see the nub I cut off n then jammed the tip of a tube of calk into it as a plug.
That way it stopped the fluid drain but gave me room to work as I drill out the broken bolt.

Levi 05-19-2007, 02:28:45 AM Cool deal, thanks guys :D
TheFly 05-19-2007, 02:48:21 AM Least I can do, dunno how many sites I signed up for looking for tips.
Many had 100's of folks online but only this one had folks willing to help / offer tips.
Still is un-answered at the others who don't deserve to be named.
Think some of them run them scripts to make it look like 100s of folks are online 24/7 but no one is home.
Levi 05-19-2007, 03:12:22 PM I know some boards do that to be the most popular board for that area but I dunno. Hopefully ill be able to help you one day.
