Autozone carries this stuff made by Bars that's specifically for rear main leaks. You just pour it in with the oil. Has anyone tried this stuff? I was thinking about giving it a try, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else had had any luck with it first.

I have not tried that brand, but from what I've seen, those products really don't live up to what they claim. JMO. Someone may have a different opinion though.

Most of that stuff is modified snake oil. Try it if you wish, but don't expect advertised results. IMHO

Yeah, that's kinda what I figure too. I think I'll save my $10.

The stop leak stuff works for a little while, it swells up the gaskets, but not just the rear main. I used that stuff in my blazer every 6-700 miles or so, as long as I didnt romp the bejesus outta the poor truck, it didnt leak bad with that stuff in there.

Put the car up on ramps.

Turn the front pully/balancer so the very front throws of the crank are in the up position.

Remove flywheel-flexplate cover.

Take out the oil pan bolts.

Drop the back of the pan down and pull back free of the crossmember. If the crank needs to turn a little more fine. Remember that the oil pick-up might hang up in the pan on a baffle or something. Sometimes you might need to unbolt and raise engine a little. I never needed to.

Remove oil pump from rear main. Take off bottom of rear main.Remove the bottom seal and slide out top half from around crank.

I offset the two new halfs a bit with some sealer on the ends, You can trim a feeler gauge blade to act as a shoehorn of sorts when you slide the new top part of seal around the crank. Make sure the seal is facing the right way. Bolt it back up and together. New pan gasket of course.

I've done only two in the car like this, first one took me 4 hrs...second one took 45 min.
This is one of those Oh My God Jobs,,,,,that really isn't that bad. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ken

Mark,

I have never used the Bars rear main stop leak, but their radiator stop leak is top notch stuff. In the 5 years I spent working at a parts store nobody complained (that I can recall) about a Bar's product and it was quite common to get chewed out when a product we sold didn't work as advertised.

The only other "quick fix" I'm aware of is JB Weld. lol (two different people actually admitted to fixing their rear main this way)

That stuff basically has brake fluid in it. Brake fluid makes seals swell up. While it might slow a leak for a while, it also will make the seal very hard and brittle. Using this stuff over and over will eventually cause the seal to really blow out and you'll have yourself a geyser. I'd repair the leak before I patched it.
