View Full Version : Engine decisions...
RainDownMyBlues 05-17-2007, 01:30:40 AM So after the paint and interior is done, I'm swapping out the engine and transmission. The old worn 305 has to go.
I'm either thinking 396 or 454 BBC...
Or a 383 or built ass 350
Which would be cheaper in the long run? Which more worth my time? I want a four speed behind it regardless. Damn autos get old.
My goal is for 500 at the wheels. N/a. Maybe a small n20 shot down the road.
ZS10 05-17-2007, 02:24:21 AM 500 hp is easist with a BB. better have a good 4 speed in mind.
RainDownMyBlues 05-17-2007, 02:34:34 AM The mucies they put behind BBC Chevelles and the like should work... no?

this is true... what will the car be used for?

They had no where near 500 to the wheels. That is a HUGE order, 500 at the crank is not as easy as some people think, even with a BB (ask me how I know).

Street weekend.... It will eventually get decent tires, but I'm not running full out drag slicks. Will see the track maybe once or twice at most.
Rick WI 05-17-2007, 03:13:28 PM If you want 500 to the wheels then you have to go big block, to retain somewhat of a normal budget. No way would I choose a 396 either, we just did one and put it on the dyno and with the full Edelbrock package it made a bit over 500 at the flywheel.
I would build a 540 if you really want 500 to the wheels with a set of AFR, Brodix or Dart heads, along with a decent hyd roller cam and Victor 4500 Intake.
Lowend 05-17-2007, 09:54:19 PM 500RWHP is gonna take a hell of a toll of the rest of the car; I would not attack such a project with less than $20K in the budget including the engine build; chassis bracing and building the drivetrain to survive
That said...

pete0331 05-17-2007, 09:59:06 PM Well if money isnt an issue get an LSX with a super charger
If its just a weekend thing i think a 383 would be pretty cool
Tweek'dZ28 05-17-2007, 10:57:25 PM go with the LS 364/440 (carb'd ls2) and take alot of pictures and let me know how it goes! :)
80'427 05-18-2007, 09:49:41 AM I dynoed 475 at the rear wheels but some wouldn't call mine a street motor. Not that radical but it is pissed off below 2500 or so and it is only a 427. I am running a super T-10 with a Iron case and 2.64 first gear. I have had a few wheels up launches and it has yet to have a problem even speed shifting it (other than some shifter binding). Of course I just spent a huge wad regearing/rebuilding it. Just remember the more horsepower the more you have to give away in other areas. I wouldn't be afraid to road trip mine but with 4.11s it will spin a few rpms. I can't use a overdrive because I don't think it would pull the car at a lower rpm. Build it as big as you can afford with a effort put to quality build. You should get close to 500 but thats just a number the E.T. numbers really tell how your car works.
RainDownMyBlues 05-23-2007, 03:22:55 AM Well I can get a truck engine 454 running, in good condition, warrenteed for two years....
Are their any differences in them and the cars aside from the cam?
shawntmartin 05-23-2007, 10:13:55 AM Are you planning to just use the engine as is, or replace a lot of parts on it? like heads, cam, intake. Whats the compression?
A weekend cruiser that won't see the track doesn't need 500HP at the real wheels unless you just want to have for bragging rights. How often would you really use 100% of that kind HP on the street? A wicked 350 is the cheapest to build, and you could spray it for big HP. Shold do fine for a weekender.
Or you could buy this BBC for $4595

RainDownMyBlues 05-25-2007, 02:56:10 AM BBC torque is what I'm wanting. 500 to the crank would be MORE than acceptable. 450 would do me.
What i am curious is what years are best to get... For hood clearance I have to use a low profile intake right?? Know of any specificly?
What motor mounts to use? Is lineing up the transmission and driveshaft hard going from an SBC to a BBC?
1FstChevy 05-25-2007, 04:12:52 AM How ABOUT an LS7??? Only around 14k on gmpartsdirect.com not to mention all the modifications you can do after installing it! and with the way gas prices are going you'll actually be able to drive it... plus, with the right exhaust you could contrive quite the SLEEPER!
You could also go for an LS2 or even LS1, they really aren't that hard to find, you just gotta make sure you get to them before anyone else does!
BTW... I don't currently have an LS series motor but I do have an EFI 355 Small Block with the Edlebrock set up putting approx 450hp to the wheels and 500ft lbs of torque but of course the rest of the motor has work done to it, and with the fuel injection it stays pretty tame under normal driving conditions!
RainDownMyBlues 05-26-2007, 06:25:41 PM I'm not dumping 14 grand into a motor right off the bat...
I am going to start calling around t omorrow on BBC engines.
Anyone got ideas on lowpro intakes?
