OK. Now that I have my oil pressure sending unit installed I have a question about the temperature sending unit. I have an old sending unit mounted in the block. I'm guessing if I go to remove that and put in the Autometer unit I'll be looking at draining and refilling my coolant.

There's also a port on my intake manifold right next to my themostat that I'm thinking of using. Does anybody have any thoughts on which is the best location for the unit? I was originally thinking the block is the best place as you'll be reading where the most heat is being generated, but I believe the water exits the top of the engine, so that should be where the water is the hotest assuming no cooling occurs prior to entering the radiator.

I don't want to do something stupid just because I'm being lazy and don't want to drain the coolant.

It would actually be easiest if I can just use the sending unit already in the block, but I need to know what the resistance I should see for a given temperature. Anybody have the specs on the thermistor for the autometer gage? I guess I coud install the new sending unit in the intake and swap between them and see if I get a cosistent temperature, but then I've already installed the new unit and I should probably use it. :screwup:

Either would be fine,I have my mech. temp gauge in the intake next to the thermostat housing like your talking about.

When you say the current sender is in the block, do you mean the side of the head? If this is what you have, there is about 6-8 inches between the water passage where the sender is located and the hole in the intake next to the thermostat housing. I doubt if the water temp between the 2 will differ by any significant amount. The only issue you may face might be interference between the upper rad hose and the sending unit installed in the intake. Good luck.

I put mine in the head where the old one was. I just pulled the old one and quickly threaded the new one in there with teflon tape on the threads. Sure, I spilled maybe 12 oz. of coolant, but there was no need to drain the system.

My bad. Yes side of the head between the front two exhaust ports. Good point also about the potential interference with the radiator hose. I think I'll put it in the manifold and check clearance. Wouldn't want to rub a hole in my hose. :( If it fits I'll take the easy route. Everything in the engine bay is still fresh clean and painted. I'll wait as long as I can before I drool coolant down the side of the block.

Teflon tape can cause a faulty gage reading on a one wire sender. You need a good ground to operate the gage. Usually the threads ground through the tape but I had one that didn't.

Would you then put anti-sieze on it or use bare metal?
