ok I got a V8 350 vortec motor from the shop I used to work at, it came out of a 97 chevy box truck (was used for service calls)....the problems then and now is that it eats the spline off the distributer....I checked the cam teeth and they look fine, but this motor has been through 3 distributers all doing the same thing, any ideas?......was going to pull timing cover to see if it jumped time,(even though it ran great!) what else should I check for?....one other ?....this is a stock motor and was wondering what the compression is.....any comments whould be helpful....thanks ghost

Most of the later small block engine and some Vortec's required the "Melonized" distributor gear due to the Steel camshaft core.

GM sells this for about $29.00 and it is used in place of the iron cam gear.

so this would explain why the spline are grinding off on the distributer?....the motor has only 98,000 miles on it why didnt it do it before?....could there be any other explaination?....thanks ghost

Use a melonized gear from GM. That's the ticket. GM used billet steel roller cams, not the iron cams like the cheapo retrofits that sell for around $250. That gear will most likely solve your problem.

Hey thanks for the info guys that helps alot.....guess I will go to GM and get that gear, still one more question,....what compression whould my motor be with stock specs, tryed to look it up but cant find it, this is all I found on my motor:
10243880...350...95-00...2 or 4...Vortec truck, Gen.I crate motors and "ZZ4", roller cam, one piece rear seal
and heads: 10239906...96-up...350.........."Vortec 5700", "L31", 64cc chamber, 170cc intake port, 1.94"/1.5" valves

I think stock is between 9.1 and 9.4.
