View Full Version : So I had my exhaust installed today, and I hate it!
thefed 05-14-2007, 04:45:30 PM I had a shop run pipes back from the headers into an x-pipe, to two summit super turbo mufflers, and dump em before the axles at a 45 degree angle
I seems I picked up a bit of mid range, not so sure about upper end...I havent calibrated my butt dyno yet. I had straight pipes back to a few Blowmasters before. I have to admit, the flowmasters sounded a LOT better. I like the throaty, gurgling, LOUDER noise.
These muffs make an even DEEPER rumble, but only up to 850rpm...past that, it smoothes right out and sounds ...umm...stock?
I might have to throw those old flowmasters back on some time..... i dunno...
curtg21 05-14-2007, 05:06:13 PM grab some pypes race pros. I added 2.5" exhuast w/x pipe, full tails, a electric wp and picked up 3 tenths. Its a straight through design with a perforated center tube. A mild rumble at idle and turns into a screaming beast when you stomp on it.
thefed 05-14-2007, 06:29:25 PM well i test drove again...and here's my analysis. the LOW DEEP noise i get at 850rpm and under is n ot even a rumble, or lope...but a HUMMMM/DRONE sound....kinda different. Then it smoothes right out to a stock sound, but does scream a little at WOT....but i think most of that noise i hear is my soild lifter motor
Butt dyno shows gains all the way thru, definitely alittle more low end throttle response....i only notice this from a roll in 1st...more spinnage/spins at a higher rolling speed. Mid end seems wicked...my 2nd gear is where its all at anyhow, and i never could even get her up to 6k on the roads...but she was screamin! 3rd felt equally as nice....lots of room to go...but i need a track to see if this helped my lack of 5krpm+ umph in 3rd gear
all in all, i think the xpipes helped. if i get some eman sounding muffs back on there ill be in heave.
I have 2 summit super turbo (supposedly dynomax blemishes) for sale i guess...pm me if interested...they were only 35 brtand new for both
They are PERFECT for a sleeper build...for sure...still a nice, deep rmble at idel, but when cruisin...u r under the radar
skatinjay27 05-14-2007, 07:11:29 PM hey man i had the same set up and guess what
I F***ING HATED IT!!!!!!! the summit turbo mufflers sound so poopy, they are the same as the dynomax blems, which means their sound sucks too.mine was i dentical to yours it has so gnarly drone and 1000 they was quite and not deep at all.also the x-pipe will cause it to have a higher pitch noise a high rpms. i now have summit race mufflers and love them they are very loud and deep.
BACK IN BLACK Z 05-14-2007, 08:17:38 PM Man Fed. If this is with the motor in your sig., I would think that even the super turbos would be making a pretty good bit of racket. Maybe you should just drive it a few times to get used to the absents of the louder previous exaust. I know in the past, I went from hedders dumping into a set of spiral glasspacks to a set of three chamber flowmasters, and I thought they were too quiet for the first few weeks. They seamed to get louder or I just started forgeting the loud azz set-up that I replaced. Just give then a week. You got nothing to lose:) . Johnny

andymiller 05-14-2007, 10:18:05 PM Not sure why everyone is againist flowmaster. I think mine sound great and flow muhc better than what I had on my car.. Two turbos

i never liked the sound on my car....the drone at 2500-3k rpm drove me crazy. but man did they sound good...compared to this at least
How do you figure they flowed better? im not saying they didn't, but did you use a finely tuned butt dyno, or just read the flow #'s on the net? just wondering
DirtyScotty 05-15-2007, 12:27:21 AM Well my setup is Hooker Supercomps 1 3/4 with 2 1/2 inch exhaust to X pipe then to Flowmasters 2 chamber Delta flows and they sound great to me. Snappy, no drone or resonance and i have them dumped before the axle. If there is anything i can complain about is MAYBE the amount of noise at idle. Aside from that cruising at different rpms is all good and the noise is behind me for the most part as in the cabin is pretty much quiet. I can have a conversation in the car at normal voice levels which i like. You can still hear the V8 rumble which is nice. Absolutely no droning or resonance issues here. I have had them before with other makes of mufflers. I have also heard them on other cars that had Flowmasters too. These mufflers seem to sound nice and work good too. Do they make the most power, not sure, I am more happy that they are not bothering me whatsoever and i have had lots of mufflers that have. Personal preference i guess.
3SLO5 05-15-2007, 12:29:26 AM just a word turbos take some time to set in so to speak quiet at first and get louder the more you drive give it a month befor you take em off.
MarcZ 05-15-2007, 01:07:52 AM pypes violators:cool: , its what i'm getting.
71 Camaro 05-15-2007, 01:23:27 AM Put some damn tailpipes on it!

Butt dyno, You could tell that it loosened the motor up going through the RPM's. This was compared to what I had. Maybe yours flows better. But mine were turbos from a shop the guy before me had put on. They weren't terrible, but not quite like a muscle car should sound like.
But I had Thrush turbos on my truck, and had flowmaster to start with, and I liked the turbos better. Felt a little more tourqe with the turbos.
Might depend on the motor setup.
71RS350 05-15-2007, 10:23:14 AM i got flowmaster 40's on mine and sound great to me and i can tell it breathes better then the crappy turbo mufflers...
camaro75LT 05-15-2007, 12:10:45 PM just a word turbos take some time to set in so to speak quiet at first and get louder the more you drive give it a month befor you take em off.
This works with glasspacks, cant hurt to try if you hate the new mufflers...
Go get them hot as hell and spray cold mist into the muffers (without tail pipes it shouldnt be to hard). Crack up all the insolation, it should change the noise they make.
muscl car 05-15-2007, 06:06:02 PM i had a custom 3" manrel bent exh system put on my camaro with a magna flow X-pipe and dellta force 1 chamber flowmaster race mufflers that exited before the axle . right away after i first started it at the muffler shop it sounded very quiet and just didn't sound right to me . so i drove home about 1.5 miles and turned around and went back to the muffler shop and had them cut off the X-pipe and run the exh without any cross-over
the exh system sounds much better now than it did even when i was running a little 6" long pipe between them "H" pipe . so between the H- pipe , X-pipe and the current set up i would say the system i'm running now works the best
sikzdrivr 05-15-2007, 09:22:55 PM they'al prolly get sounding better as you "break" them in.
POS71RS 05-16-2007, 11:04:04 AM I've had 2 chamber Flows on mine for years now, and I've gotten a TON of compliments over the years... and most the time was with a dead stock motor.
Now that I'm old and gray (28 ;) ) I've thought about getting something quieter, but it's waaaay down the list after everything else is worried about.
cmonson 05-16-2007, 04:21:47 PM Buy the pypes violators, they are the best sounding muffler out there that I tried, and I went through 3.
the_camaro_kid 05-16-2007, 04:38:07 PM I put the summit super turbos on mine and I think they sound great!
I used the 2 1/4" summit exhaust kit from the headers with an h-pipe before the mufflers. It sounds great at idle, I think whenever your giving it gas it sounds loud. But when I floor it I think it sounds like a race car. I was very happy with it, my exhaust exits right below the bumper.
To each there own though.
rindoze 05-16-2007, 05:22:06 PM I got 3 inch exhaust dumping out of the sides in front of the rear wheel with some real cheap I-don't-know brand mufflers off summit. Sounds awesome but is super super super loud and scares away most people. Also I can't drive with a couple people in the car without scraping the ground so I think I'm gona trash em.
CWT Racin' 05-16-2007, 06:15:26 PM I have tried the new cherry bomb turbo muff's, I can tell you that you will like them, plus they are not expensive.
musclecarjohn 05-16-2007, 08:14:41 PM Getting the Flowmaster Super 44's installed on my '70 Z/28 tomorrow, had these same mufflers installed on my '69 Z last week: 1 7/8" Hooker S/C's,custom-made X-pipe,3" exhaust exiting before the rear axle.
LOUD,LOUD,LOUD...and I like it!Rumble in the cabin at idle,no conversation or music allowed.
shawntmartin 05-16-2007, 10:01:38 PM You are getting dozens of different opinions... none of them the same. First of all, "loud" by itself doesn't mean crap. A huge exhaust manifold leak from a 1991 Corolla can be heard 2 blocks over. Not real impressive. Do you want deep, pissed off rumble thats still impressive from 30 feet away? Then get ANY 1 chamber race muffler or any bullet (hollow tube) style muffler. ANY turbo muffler sounds like a stock muffler you would hear on a newer stock V8 car, like the early 2000 Trans Ams and Camaros. Slight performance sound at idle. Lets face it, "loud" is relative, "mean" is relative. The best way for YOU to decide is to visit a million websites and listen to the sound clips. I have the older style (not Delta) 1 chamber race mufflers from Flowmaster (just a few decibles lower than open headers) and with a 106 LSA cam it thumps as good as the best I've ever heard. Loud, echoing, deep, rattling, hood shaking, pissed off sounds. Go to the member search on this site, search for MWilson, and click on his cardomain.com page. then listen to the "Fayetteville runs" clip AFTER he does the burn out and is idling when he is staging. And listen to "on the dyno". I wish he had the old clip where he's idling in his driveway. It sounds like that, but mine has a slightly deeper tone....probably because I'm only hearing it through my computer speakers. You want loud and deep, get 1 chamber race mufflers or Flowmaster Outlaw Series (bullet), or any bullet style muffler like Dynomax bullets. The Pypes Violaters seem pretty mean depending on what car its connected to. After hearing the red 1978 Camaro on their website... I thought.... Yuck! The car sounds like a diesel at idle. But there were a few other cars that sounded pretty nice. The Violators are the most decibles of any in their line. Some cars sound a little trebley with the exhaust note. More pronouced or "clacky" sound. The 1 chambers sound somewhat similar to these but I think the 1 chambers have a bit deeper tone and are more "racier" sounding. There are sound clips on this site, then check out the Violators and compare.
